It’s official, the Halloween season is over. No more costumes, no more candy, and no more horror movies; now begins the countdown to Christmas. It is no secret that many people argue about when Christmas starts: Is it after Thanksgiving? Is it after Halloween? I am here to determine the official start date by asking fellow Royals their opinions on when Christmas should start.

The first side of the debate: Christmas starts after Halloween

Emma Fredman ’23 says, “Christmas starts on November 3 when I get my Christmas Starbucks drink. I love the caramel brulee latte: the first sip of that drink is when the Christmas season begins.” For some, waiting for Christmas to begin is not possible — they must listen to Christmas music. Trista Verne ’23 says, “Why wait to listen to Christmas music when you can get into the Christmas spirit now?” Christmas is so amazing so people should start celebrating. Bring out the hot cocoa and Christmas movies because it is time to enjoy the season.

The other side of the debate: Christmas starts after Thanksgiving

Caela Cabal ’23 says, “The second you take your last bite of the Thanksgiving meal is when the Christmas season truly starts. I may be a little biased, though, because my birthday is during Thanksgiving break, so skipping Thanksgiving is like skipping my birthday.” And yes, Thanksgiving is not as great as Christmas but it still deserves the space to be a holiday. With pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese, it’s a known fact that Thanksgiving dinners are unbeatable. After that though, everyone should blast Christmas music and take in the Christmas spirit. Senior Vivi Mercado says, “I think Christmas should not start until after Thanksgiving because the anticipation makes it even better. Counting down the days till Christmas is almost just as fun as celebrating it.”

No matter when you think Christmas should begin, I think we can all agree that Christmas is the best holiday: cold weather, Christmas songs, and fuzzy socks are immaculate and cannot be beaten.
