In the spirit of Red and Gold, let’s talk about the one that got canceled. Whether you were a student at Rosary at the time or not, we bet that March 12, 2020, was the weirdest day of your life. But the crying selfies we saw that day on the internet were impossible to count.

For current Juniors and Seniors, it was the day that the 50th annual Red and Gold, “A Magic Moment,” was postponed; this is a core memory for all of us. Seeing girls sob in the quad is engraved in our brains. It was heartbreaking to see, but the day displayed an immense amount of passion and love Royals have for their most beloved tradition.

For us, we were both first-year fashion captains and we could not wait for performance weekend to share our hard work (Red and Gold 2020 is how we became inseparable best friends). We were so excited to show the community our awesome Leprechaun costumes we made for Kate Goggins’ ‘21 drill. Although our costumes never got to see the stage, we were and still are incredibly proud of the work we put into our design. After the cancellation, we spent the rest of the day mourning and hysterically sobbing- how could life get any worse?

Riley Hawkins ‘20 was the Gold Producer in 2020, and her passion for Red and Gold is like no other; she said, “It was completely soul-crushing. I had never been so disappointed in my entire academic career.” Riley Hawkins is a Red and Gold icon, and her love for the tradition is felt by many. She produced a fantastic show and is a great alum to look up to.

Mr. Bevins, who was teaching sophomore English classes at the time, stated “I don’t even remember that day, so much has happened since then.” I (Daly) remember speaking to Mr. Bevins that sad day, and he indeed did have us continue to read 1984 while we cried our eyes out.

When asked about March 12, 2020, Kate Curry ‘22 says, “Tears. God cried with us that day as he filled the sky with rain, rain, and more rain. After finding out the awful news, I walked up the hill to the LeVecke household to wipe my tears with quesadillas, and wow were those good quesadillas.”

Now, we know there is a common thought that goes through everyone’s head when it comes to Red and Gold 2020, and that is, “who would’ve won?” For the students attending in 2020, everyone wants to say proudly and confidently that their team 100% won, but honestly, there is no real way of knowing. Both shows were completely different from the few clips we saw of each show and the songs we heard through the curtains and outside on the lawn, but there was no sign of a winner throughout the season. We guess the world may never know.

Although Red and Gold, “A Magic Moment,” never got its weekend of glory, we will forever remember the dedication that got us to March 12, 2020. RIP R&G 2020 <3.
