While many Royals hit the beach this weekend, some Servite Friars were enjoying the splendors of the ocean in a different way. This Sunday, April 19, accompanied by two teachers, 31 members of Servite’s Fishing Club went for an exciting fishing excursion. Their charter boat departed from the Los Angeles Harbor and sailed close to Catalina Island.
The fishin’ Friars managed to reel in about 250 fish! They caught rockfish, sheephead, calico bass and half moons. The club’s presidents, Tony Blonska ’26 and Shane Ukishima ‘26, commented, “This was the Servite Fishing Club’s sixth charter trip and was extremely successful. Everyone enjoyed the nature and embraced the beautiful waters of Santa Catalina Island.” Sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday.

Logan Vaughan, a sophomore member of the club, had great success this weekend: “I caught four rockfish and four other whitefish. I had a great time and can’t wait to go on the next trip.” Logan also reported that one teacher went home with 31 fish! His classmate, Xavier Mascaro ’28, said, “On the spring Fishing Club trip, I caught 15 fish off the coast of Catalina Island, which included Boccaccio rockfish, canary rockfish, Pacific flounder, Catalina blue perch, starry rockfish and vermillion. I had a great time fishing with my friends and eating fish tacos!”
In case you were wondering why this trip was so great, Tony shared, “By the way, this club reigns supreme at Servite, and we are the premier and unparalleled institution among the Friars. No, really, we are the ones.” I guess we’ll have to take your word for it, Tony.
Who knows? Maybe Rosary’s Oceanography class caught some fish at the tidepools. I hope all the members of the fishing club are looking forward to their next outing!
