This past Sunday, Feb. 1, the triathlon team had its first race of the spring season. Two Royals raced at the UCI Zot-Trot, which is a reverse tri (so it goes run, bike, swim). Triathlon is a year-round sport here at Rosary, but it takes a winter break due to the cold weather.
The course consisted of a three-mile run, a 12-mile bike and 250-yard swim on UCI’s campus. Being that it was hosted at UCI, it was open to college teams and the general public, which was a great opportunity for our athletes to get exposure to college coaches.
Junior Cat Ryan placed first in her age category, with Olivia Keller ‘28 placing fourth in her age category. Olivia commented, “The race was super exciting and such a great way to finish off my weekend, and it’s always a plus seeing the college athletes race too! Go Royals!”
The triathlon team trains every Sunday, and a majority of the team are dual-sport athletes, so our triathletes were well-prepared for the race. Cat loved the race, saying, “Our UCI race is always a fun one that I personally look forward to each year. The atmosphere is always supportive and energetic. We were blessed with beautiful, clear weather and a great course ahead of us early in the morning! This season, I am looking forward to many other fun races with my amazing team and coach. Nothing is quite like this community!”

The triathlon team is looking forward to finishing the school year strong with two more races! Come out and support them at the Race on Base in Los Alamitos on Feb. 28 and the Mission Bay Triathlon on April 25 in Mission Viejo.
