The Rosary Academy Varsity Basketball team, renowned for its long withstanding success on the court, has had its fair share of ups and downs this season thus far. From triumphant wins, to frustrating losses, to injuries and more, these Royal athletes have impressively been able to persevere through it all.
Starting off this season strong with a plethora of consecutive tournament game wins, the Royals felt confident in their performance and stats. In fact, when the team attended the Upland High School Tournament this past December, they became the tournament’s top finisher, having garnered an amazing 4-0 run and even a few MVP and all-tournament awards for its players.
But, as league games began, competition grew much more vigorous. Quickly, the team found themselves struggling to pull out a win, losing back-to-back games, succumbing by double-digits to Mater Dei and losing by only one point in a devastating loss against Orange Lutheran.
Unfortunately though, simply losing a few games in a row was not yet the end of the hard times for this year’s Varsity team. Only a few weeks ago, Senior transfer Kayla Borgelt badly injured her left knee in a home game. A star player on both offense and defense, this season-ending injury proved to be a crushing blow for the Royals’ starting lineup.
Despite all of this, however, the team has still remained hardworking and optimistic, playing great basketball all the way up until the final buzzer, no matter the score.
These resilient Royals don’t let obstacles break them down. Sophomore Kate Duarte notes on the teams’ optimistic outlook when it comes to their hardships this season: “The Rosary Basketball team has persevered through wins and losses by taking every loss as an opportunity. We try to learn from it and get better. With Kayla getting hurt, we kind of had to reorganize on the court and find our rhythm again. But luckily, we overcame this challenge. I hope that our team gets very far in the playoffs and eventually wins CIF.”
Team captain, four-year varsity starter, and LMU commit Allison Clarke ‘24 adds onto this statement about the Royals’ perseverance this season: “Our season was definitely full of many obstacles, but overall, we were able to come together and rise to the challenges that came our way.”
The Rosary Varsity Basketball team still has many more games left in this 2023-2024 season, so be sure to show your love and support for these tremendous athletes before the season is over!
