Growing up, I loved hearing my mom’s stories from her childhood, like the time she pushed her older sister into a canal or when she and my cousins ran away from the neighborhood witch. And I also love exchanging funny childhood stories with other people, although mine are not as interesting as my mom’s; as she would like to put it: I haven’t “had a childhood.” (Funny seeing that’s coming from the person who raised me…but there was this one time I basically became an international criminal, but we don’t talk about that.)

This inspired me to ask some people if they had any…interesting childhood stories. The question is, are they actually interesting? You be the judge of that!

Skylar Cooper ’22

“When I was 2, I put a Barbie doll shoe up my nose, yeah crazy, I know. I was an interesting child. Anyways, I ended up being in the ER for 3 hours; they had to use this big tweezer to get it out. What’s funny is that I still have the shoe; it’s actually my 18th birthday present because it was $500 at the ER to get it out. My mom is going to get the baby shoe dipped in gold and hung on a gold chain and give it to me as my 18th birthday present.”

“I was about three, and we were on our way home from the dentist. I was looking through my goodie bag they gave me, playing with all the toys in it. I found the tooth paste that was put in my bag. As the curious child I was, I started playing with the tube. Once I opened it, I noticed it has red, blue, and green swirls. (This was the red white and blue toothpaste.) I squished the tube, making the toothpaste come out. With the tube I made a crown on my head, and put more all over me. All my mom could do was laugh she helping me take a bath.”

“I got detention in first grade for stealing the assistant teacher’s hand sanitizer and punching a boy in my class in the face. Detention wound up being in the fourth grade teacher’s classroom. At the beginning of detention, the fourth grade teacher said we weren’t allowed to raise our hands or talk at all. Suddenly, while writing down verses of the bible in silence, I desperately felt the need to use the bathroom. I raised my hand and waved it all around trying to get the fourth grade teacher to see me. She refused to look up from the papers she was grading. I started moving back and forth trying not to wet my pants. At last, an older boy in detention noticed my plight and said to the teacher, “I think she needs to go to the bathroom.” The teacher was like “Oh, sorry. Okay, go ahead.” I was like “THANK YOU!” I got up and started wobbling to the bathroom as fast as I could with my legs crossed trying not to burst. I was halfway from my desk to the door when I couldn’t hold it any longer. I peed on the teacher’s floor. I ran away to the bathroom and the fifth grade teacher had to come in after me and take me to the office to change my underwear. SLAY!”

As a fun bonus, here’s one about Ms. Barclay’s adorable Baby Clay!

“Clay is a really funny kid and he has quirks. For example, he doesn’t like when I wear certain jackets and no one is allowed to wear shoes in the house whatsoever. He also sleeps with around 20 stuffed animals in his crib and he knows all their names. He talks about himself only in third person and he only wants to eat papitas (French fries) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Finally, he INSISTS that anyone who parks in the driveway park ‘otro lado,’ which means they need to back into the driveway and be facing out. If anyone violates this rule, it’s mayhem.”

Growing up can be difficult, but from that comes fun stories that end up being shared on your high school’s online newspaper!
