Each year, the fashion industry, celebrities, philanthropists, and other public figures gather on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the Met Gala, or also known as the Costume Institute Benefit. Some notable attendees this year include singer Lana Del Rey, NFL player Jalen Hurts, singer Clairo and Olympians Simone Biles and Gabby Thomas. The event’s co-chairs were F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, actor Colman Domingo, musical artists A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams and, of course, fashion icon Anna Wintour.
This year’s theme was Tailored for You, inspired by the exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This theme celebrated a style and cultural movement called Dandyism, which uses flamboyant and refined fashion as a form of self-expression, resistance, and identity formation in Black communities. The Met Gala drew inspiration from the book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” by Monica L. Miller. The art exhibit will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 10 through October 26.
Considering that I get to rock this Vicky Marsha uniform every day when I come to school, who better to review the Met Gala than me and some of my fellow Royals?
My favorite look has to be rapper Bad Bunny. Bad Bunny wore custom Prada this year as he sported a brown suit alongside a hat. This look is my favorite because the hat he wore holds traditional significance: it is a pava, a traditional woven straw hat from Puerto Rico. Since Bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico, seeing him represent his culture on such a prominent stage is truly special.
English Teacher Ms. Brinegar ’16, one of Rosary’s resident fashionistas, also watched the red carpet

and carefully critiqued each look. She shared, “My favorite look was Chappell Roan. I loved how vibrant her outfit was; I also appreciated the historical context and her partnership with multiple Black designers and artists to ensure she was honoring the theme.” Fun fact, Chappell Roan, Ms. Brinegar and Social Studies Teacher Mrs. LeClair all have the exact same birthday! No wonder Ms. Brinegar is such a fan.
Senior Danielle Pirnat shares, “My favorite look was definitely Keith Powers’s outfit which was designed by Boss. It was unique in its own way, and he pulled it off very well.”
Some other fan favorite looks were Keke Palmer, Doechii, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Lupita Nyong’o, Jeff Goldblum and Emma Chamberlain. Whose Met Gala look was your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
