It’s March, which also means it’s time for Rosary’s favorite college basketball tournament: March Madness. The tournament officially starts on Sunday, March 16, and many people partake in the tournament by participating in bracket competitions.
Here at Rosary, Mrs. Hunt, our Assistant Principal of Academics and AP Chemistry and Biology teacher, and her husband Mr. Hunt who is Servite’s Assistant Principal of Academics run a bracket competition amongst the schools. Since 2016, Rosary has taken three wins while Servite has five.
Mrs. Hunt describes the friendly competition, “This is an annual competition that we started in 2016! In this challenge, our classes are competing for pride and the Bracket Trophy to stay at Rosary. It was at Servite since 2018…we finally won it back last year! My class added some Red & Gold bling/spirit to the trophy!” Along with the coveted trophy, the winner gets a lunch provided by Mr. and Mrs. Hunt.

Last year, junior Rae Lopez won the trophy back from Servite. She commented, “I enjoyed participating in Mrs. Hunt’s March Madness competition last year. I was very surprised I won, and I look forward to hopefully doing it again this year!” Good luck, Rae.
Auburn, Duke and Florida are favored to win the men’s tournament so hopefully the Royals chose well. Mrs. Hunt explains how the brackets work, “We have individual students enter their brackets for a chance to win bragging rights (and a free lunch from us). Then we also have a class bracket competition (one per period). We compete against Mr. Hunt’s classes at Servite.” Mrs. Hunt also added that alumni partake in this tradition as well.
Both schools view the competition as friendly and fun, Mr. Hunt added, “What I love most about the friendly competition between schools during March Madness is the connection and camaraderie it fosters among Friars and Royals. In the past, it has been my classes versus Mrs. Hunt’s classes, creating a spirited and joyful rivalry. Watching students track their standings compared to their sister school sparks fun dialogues with friends and, in some cases, siblings. The brackets not only add fun and engagement to March Madness but also support our schools’ college-going cultures and strengthen the spiritual bond between our communities.”
The competition is open to any Rosary student, so email Mrs. Hunt if this is something you are interested in. Let’s keep Rosary’s win-streak going!
