Over Christmas Break, we closed out 2024 and welcomed the new year. This past year was truly one to remember, so let’s take a closer look at the bigger moments we, as a school and as a country, experienced. Keep reading to review our most memorable moments of 2024.
January:
At Rosary, we kicked off the new year with Red & Gold Kickoff which opened the most beloved Rosary tradition. After learning our teams and categories, ASB started kickoff at the rally by revealing the theme: The Great Escape! With skits, the Red and Gold Teams announced their prospective mascots: the Red Surfers, the Gold Skaters, and White Skiers. Red Team’s Co-Producer in 2024, Jazzy Sandoval ’25, remarked, “I was super excited for kickoff because I never got to experience the captain side of Red and Gold. It was so much fun to see our hard work all over the school. My kickoff memories are definitely ones I will never forget!”
Also in January, the 75th Emmys took place in Los Angeles. This past year’s Emmys saw winners from “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” “Hacks,” and “The Bear.”
February:
Our very own Rosary Water Polo won the D4 CIF Championships! We are so proud of them for bringing home the win. They also got to unveil a shiny new banner in the Karcher Center.
February also marked the 66th Grammy Awards. Winners included Taylor Swift (a Rosary favorite), Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and SZA.
Superbowl LVIII also kicked off in February. The Chiefs pulled through against the 49ers in Las Vegas where Alicia Keys and Usher performed a stunning halftime show.
March:
March was a very high-energy month at Rosary as it held the most important event of the year: Red & Gold! Fortunately for Christina Vaughan ‘26, she won with her own script alongside Mia Kennedy ‘24. Unfortunately for Bella Ramirez ‘26, Red & Gold 2024 marked her second loss with the Gold Team earning their win with the best overall show.
March was also the month that Rosary officially welcomed Libby, our very own service dog. You can visit Libby in the nurse’s office on certain days.
April:
In April, many Royals made their global appearance in Spain and France. They had an amazing time visiting exciting new places. Melina Gonzalez ’26 had a great time on the trip: “The France and Spain trip was so much fun, and I made so many great memories! During our time in France, I enjoyed seeing the lights sparkle on the Eiffel Tower at night: it was truly breathtaking to view in person. Another great memory was visiting the small city of Toledo, Spain. I enjoyed learning about their rich history and enjoyed the beautiful view of the city.”
One of Rosary’s religion teachers, Mrs. Vasquez ‘17, welcomed home a precious baby girl! On April 20, Hailey Vasquez was born at 12:41 a.m. weighing 5.9 pounds and measuring 18 inches long.
A solar eclipse also occurred in April allowing many Royals to look toward the sun, with special glasses of course, and see the moon passing over the sun.
Popular artist, singer, and songwriter Taylor Swift announced her new album “The Tortured Poets Department.” With the school filled with Swifties, this announcement was an especially good part of the year.
May:
As May came around, feelings of pride and sadness swelled in the Rosary community as the Class of 2024 graduated. This class went on to further their education and do great things in the world.
Prom, and upperclassmen favorite event, was held at the Yost Theater. Crowned king and queen, Gigi Coo ‘24 and Moises Ibarra ‘24 shared a dance at the Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed Prom.
For many students, May marked an important date for them: AP exams. After studying all year, these students got to show off their academic skills on their tests.
June:
In June, many service-minded Royals headed off to RAD (Rising Above Disabilities) Camp at Vanguard University. They partnered up with a new friend from the RAD program and spent a week making memories with them. Junior Brooke Selinger participated in this year’s RAD Camp and shared, “I would say my favorite part was seeing the smiles on the campers’ faces throughout the whole week. You can tell how much RAD Camp means to them and it made me so happy that I got to be a part of it.”
July:
In July, Rosary hosted the second session of its Girls Lead Camp. Girls Lead is a summer camp for middle schoolers planned by Rosary students, encompassing several different activities and guest speakers.
Additionally, in July the 2024 Paris Olympics began. The competitions debuted all of the traditional sports and the new additions of breaking (breakdancing), kayak cross and sport climbing. America took home 126 medals.
August:
August ended the summer with school beginning on Aug. 12. Senior Isabella Solis expressed, “It was a little sad coming back from vacation and returning to school, but I was excited for what my last year of high school was going to bring and was looking forward to making the best of a new school year.” It might have been bitter-sweet for our seniors, but freshman Victoria Gonzalez shared a different perspective: “I was so nervous because it was my first time taking honors classes, and I also wanted to make as many friends as I could!”
September:
In September, Rosary held its annual Cracked Crab. This beloved parent social event helps raise funds for Rosary’s sports teams and includes a delicious seafood dinner served by Rosary Royals.
October:
October was a fulfilling month for Rosary. The beginning of the month marked Rosary Day. When juniors get their class rings and the whole school participates in a Disneyland trip.
Also in October, Servite hosted an entertaining Homecoming dance. At the dance, seniors Sabrina Martin and Brandon Bass were named Homecoming royalty.
On Halloween, Royals earned back the privilege to wear Halloween costumes, and Royals definitely came back in style. It was a very exciting day for the community as our Athletics Director and science teacher, Mrs. Kaluzny, announced her pregnancy on Halloween!
Finally, to round out the month, some seniors attended the fall Kairos. During this religious retreat, they got to make new bonds with classmates, learn about themselves, and most importantly, deepen their faith.
November:
In November, Rosary was featured in the OC Catholic Newspaper.
Royals also danced the night away at the annual Father-Daughter Dance at the Marriott Anaheim. This year, Harper Clark ‘26 and her dad won the highly anticipated dance competition.
Also in the headlines: Servite Football played St. John Bosco at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
The month also marked the first time that many Royals voted in a Presidential Election.
Next, an iHeart Radio DJ captured the hearts of many Rosary Royals after the winter sports rally in a surprise appearance.
Finally, Royals ‘held space’ for the hit release of “Wicked,” which grossed about $635 million worldwide.
December:
To round the year off, English teacher and Assistant Dean, Mrs. Langenwalter, surprised her students with a very exciting pregnancy announcement. Sami DiCrisi ’26 expressed her happiness towards the amazing news: “I am so excited for her to have a baby! I know she will be a great mom and keep her baby very fashionably dressed. Yay, Mrs. Langenwalter!”
Royals also spent a nice afternoon bonding with their moms at the beloved Mother-Daughter Christmas Brunch. There was shopping, food, festive music, and fun had by all.
From Red and Gold to the Presidential Election, 2024 was certainly one to remember. Many Royals would agree that the highlight of the year was either Disneyland on Rosary Day, the dances or, of course, Red and Gold. Sophomore Micaela Fonseca shared her favorite Red and Gold memory: “My favorite memory is coming into the gym after the last Red and Gold performance and running through the tunnel with everyone so filled with excitement that we were screaming nonstop.” One of Rosary’s Spanish teachers, Señora Ray, said that her favorite memory from 2024 at Rosary was “taking the girls to Europe and showing them around Paris, Madrid and Barcelona.”
We hope that 2024 was filled with fun, new and memorable experiences. As we welcome the new year, we cannot wait to make more amazing memories!
