Now that fall is over and the winter season is here, water polo, basketball, wrestling, and soccer are all in full swing at Rosary Academy. Royals have been working hard all season to prepare themselves to perform at the highest level; all the hard work the girls have put in can now be showcased. Read below for an update on each of our winter sports.
Soccer
The Royals had their first scrimmage against Newport Harbor on Nov. 26, but their first official game was against El Dorado on December 3rd. Although the Royals lost that one, they bounced back to win their next game against Aliso Niguel on Dec. 5.
When I asked junior Bella Cantos about how the season was going, she said, “We’re off to a strong start and we have a good team with lots of talented players. We are super motivated and excited for the season ahead of us.” Their next game is on Dec. 10 against JSerra. Let’s all be sure to cheer our Royals on and help lead them to victory.
Water polo
Rosary’s water polo season officially started Dec. 6. They will be competing in the 2nd annual Varsity Warriors Holiday Series at Sonora High School on Dec. 6 and 7. After that, their next tournament is the Corona Tournament at Corona High School. The girls have been working hard for so long, and they have so many goals they want to accomplish for this season. They are coached by Jessica Hermosillo ’14 , Gabriel Martinez, and Katherine Tijerina ’15.
On her goals for the season, sophomore Destiny Perez shared, “My goals for this season are to enjoy every game we have left wit our seniors who we’ve become so close with. I also really want us to qualify for CIF championships again this year and create more memories with the team.”
Basketball
Rosary Academy’s famous and award-winning basketball team is now back in session. With top players like Riyanna Meaders ’27, Kate Duarte ’26, and Kylie Yoon ’27 and coaches Leslie Aragon, Ben Rodriguez, and Coach Schmitt, their season’s prospects are looking bright. Their preseason games started back in November, when they won their game against Firebaugh High School with a score of 78-10. So far, the team holds a 4-3 record. Their next game is on Dec. 10 against Upland High School.
Commenting on her goals for her final season, senior Calista Purwadi stated, “Some of my goals for this year are to get better with the team and to play through March, into CIF.”
Wrestling
The Royal wrestling team is small but mighty! While they only have three girls on the team, they make a huge statement. Their first wrestling event was on Dec. 4 vs. Laguna Beach. Their next event is the Walnut Girls Invitational held at Walnut High School. Coached by Nadia Escamilla, they are sure to have what it takes to make a statement this year.
All in all, these Royals have put in so much hard work; we are all excited to watch it pay off. Make sure to show up to games and support all of your fellow Rosary sisters in their sports. Congratulations and good luck this season, Royals!
