Like most of society, John M. Chu’s 2024 movie adaptation of Winnie Holzman’s play has taken the Rosary community by storm. From the movie’s questionable promo to its raving reviews, many Royals are currently holding space for “Wicked.”
First, to better understand what exactly “holding space” means, I asked resident “Wicked” expert Elizabeth Larson ’25 what it means to her: “Holding space, for me, is almost like holding a special place in my heart for something that really resonates with me. It’s almost like whatever I hold space for is something that can do no wrong.” If you ask me, holding space is exactly that! It’s carving out a bit of your time for something that truly matters to you and brings you joy.
Then, when I asked “Wicked” superfan senior Celine Asido what she’s holding space for in in the film, she stated, “I am holding space for Jonathan Bailey, especially the fact that he did his own choreography!” For some reason, Jonathan Bailey is brought up every time I ask about “Wicked,” but I’ll just leave that out in the air because I have no idea why, since I have yet to see the film myself.
On her thoughts on “Wicked” as a whole, junior Addison Felix added, “It was really good, but I kind of forgot that there was going to be an act two. I also enjoyed all the allusions and easter eggs to ‘The Wizard of Oz!'”
Finally, adding onto her previous statement, Celine Asido ’25 shared that she is also holding space for “the part in ‘Popular’ when Galinda takes Elphaba’s glasses off, contemplates it for a moment, and then puts them back on again–the comedic timing was excellent!”
Based on these enthusiastic and downright poetic statements, I will surely be joining on the Wicked train when I watch it over the weekend with my Royal Reporter colleague, Rebecca Nassar ’25. Moreover, make sure to comment on what part of “Wicked” you are currently holding space for!
