For the past few months, the mock trial team has been working tirelessly to prepare their case. This last week, the girls competed against Sunny Hills High School and won! As part of the team, I will provide some insight as to what being on mock trial looks like.
Being on the team is a big time commitment as we practice every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. These days are long, and range from anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. However, practices are always filled with laughs and most importantly–yummy food. Sophia Lombardi ’28 said, “I love the team bonding and the snacks, especially our Coach Myra‘s cookies.”
Our mock trial practices look different depending on the day. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, attorneys usually individually run direct and cross examinations with their witnesses. On Saturdays, we run two full trials with pretrial, statements and objections. Since our volunteer coaches are attorneys, they are a big help in preparing us to compete to our best abilities.
When I asked Madison Curry ’28 about her thoughts on mock trial, she expressed, “ever since the first meeting, I have really loved the welcoming and encouraging support of all the girls participating in mock trial.”
While the competitions can be nerve wracking, this year’s case is a kidnapping case and it has been super fun to learn about all the different ways you could find someone guilty.
All in all, mock trial has been a great experience. While the time commitment is big and the work load is heavy, there is no better feeling than winning a trial you have been preparing for months. If you are considering partaking next year, I would totally recommend.
This Thursday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m., the prosecution team competes at the Santa Ana Courthouse; be sure to come out and support!
