With Halloween fast approaching, the daunting task of choosing a Halloween costume is one that we must face in the coming weeks. However, spending so much time in class, it can be hard to think of anything outside of school. Entertaining this thought, I’ve compiled a list of Halloween costumes inspired by literary characters.
- The Green Knight
This iconic character from the story “Sir Gawain” the Green Knight is perfect if green’s your color. Decked out in head-to-toe green, the Green Knight is sure to help you blend into nature as you go about your Halloween festivities or go trick-or-treating. Some green tights with a green skirt and sweater are sure to do the trick with this costume!
- Hamlet
From a family of royalty, this costume is sure to make you feel regal amidst a Halloween season while also fitting the spooky vibe. Hamlet dons a bohemian style white blouse with a black leather vest that can surely be found at your local Free People. Also, with a skull as your prop, you’re sure to turn heads with your iconic and easily-recognizable costume.
- Circe
If you’re looking for a flowy, chiffon look, this costume is for you! This goddess-turned-enchantress is a great character to replicate if you want to deck yourself out in gold jewelry or any extravagant accessories of that kind. Gold arm bands and a gold leaf crown are sure to make you stand out this Halloween season.
- Holden Caulfield
If you read “The Catcher in the Rye,” this costume will surely pique your interest. If you want to adopt a rugged, tortured soul-chic look this Halloween, then consider the protagonist of ‘The Catcher in the Rye.” His iconic red hunting hat and plaid outfit is a classic for anyone who is a fan of this beloved novel. Are you going hunting or trick-or-treating? No one will ever know!
I reached out to a former Royal to get their thought on these costumes:
Alum Mary Nassar ’22 shares, “I would definitely have to say Hamlet because it’s one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and I loved reading it in AP Lit! The play fits so well for spooky season, and I love the Elizabethan vibes for the costume as well! Such a great way to rep my love for Shakespeare, especially as an English major!”
Whatever you wear this Halloween, I’m sure it will be just as creative and chic as these ideas. If you do find yourself stumped, however, consider these literary characters…or maybe just look on Pinterest for inspiration. Either way, happy Halloween season, Royals!
