For many years there has been an athletic rivalry between Servite and Mater Dei. To celebrate, Servite hosts a spirit week for the football showdown between the Friars and Monarchs. On Friday, the Servite Friars will smash a car and some boys will get the famous Friar cut.
The Friar cut is a hair cut like a 9th century monk. In spirit of rivalry, the boys spray paint a car in Mater Dei colors and smash it. Here is what the Servite community had to say on rivalry week against Mater Dei:
Servite football freshman Cole Castillo shared his thoughts on what the Monarch vs. Friar rivalry meant to him. “ This rivalry means everything. It has been going on for centuries. Upsets will happen, even to ranked teams. It is what makes the game more intense. It takes the whole team to win.” He exclaims that he is going to lean on his brothers with the leadership of his coaches who have helped him prepare for his rivalry game to be a successful team.
Asylum leader Calen Rayna ‘25 commented on the competition: “I am hyped for rivalry week. We got a big game and our boys are going to show out. It’s not just any opponent. A win against your rivals feels a lot better than any other win.” Calen sounds super excited for the game this Friday.
Freshman Mateo Pacelli shared his thoughts on his first rivalry week, “I am very excited for my first rivalry week and the rally at school. I think that we will beat Mater Dei in football because we have a strong team this year and I would like to see the unbeaten streak going. I am also thrilled Homecoming is the same week!”
Hope everyone has a great rivalry/homecoming week. Don’t forget to go to the Servite football game vs. Mater Dei at Mt. Sac at 7 p.m. The theme is pro dress. Beat MD!
