It all started when I was watching a video of Joshua Bassett hilariously tumbling in the middle of his stage performance. I was suddenly hit with a wave of deja-vu. Somewhere, with countless other celebrities, I had seen this before. And with this sudden realization, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Why is it that so many celebrities have fallen on (and sometimes off) stage?”
Let’s begin with Travis Scott, the rapper behind the iconic songs “SICKO MODE” and “FE!N,” along with many more. A few years ago, a video of him went viral of the performer “falling in autotune.” Being that I was relatively new to social media at the time, this became my first (but still favorite) witness of this phenomenon.
Scott was one fall, but I began to see more and more over time with other performers such as Playboi Carti, Lupe Fiasco, and Tory Lanez. With every added occurrence of yet another person falling on/off stage, it became stranger to me how often it actually happened.
So when Bassett had finally allowed me to realize this, I did what every sane person would: go on a deep dive of every celebrity that had done this. And oh boy let me tell you, what I had seen online only scratched the surface of this phenomenon, for even bigger names like Madonna, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez are all guilty of this infamous on-stage tumble. That’s just naming a few of them; the list goes on and on!
Now let’s ask the big question, the one that has been burning in the back of all our minds: “Why is this happening?” As of current, I’ve gathered a couple theories…
Senior Rebecca Nassar has a theory on this: “I believe it’s something in the fog machines. The chemicals in those things can’t be good for them.” That’s a good one, Rebecca! Those fog machines definitely need some investigating.
Senior Vianna Cabal adds, “Maybe they want the publicity from all the fans laughing about their crazy fall.” So it’s all a publicity stunt, huh? Clever move.
Senior Savina Padilla describes, “I think celebrities get too excited. It’s like when dogs get the zoomies and don’t know what to do with their energy. Them falling is their body giving out.” OK, I see your logic, Savina. That’s kind of a strange comparison though…
In the end, whether or not we answer this question, it’s safe to say that these instances have given us a good laugh, even if they may be fake. Still, it’s important that we all wish safety upon our beloved performers who have worked tirelessly to give their audiences a great time. We love you even when you take a little tumble!
