Brooke Skipton ‘24 is a passionate devotee of languages. As president of both the French Club and Language Lover’s League, she is also the first president of Rosary’s French National Honors Society. At the senior awards ceremony she earned the AP French commendation awarded by Madame Neumann, who wanted to share a few words about Brooke: “Brooke is not just an outstanding French student, she is a true language learner, who actively engages in the process and practice of language acquisition. As the president of French Club and founding president of Language Lovers League, she and her officers held meetings that were relevant, informative, and really fun!”
Below, I interviewed Brooke about her interest in learning languages:
Q: What inspired you to learn languages?
A: I have always wanted to learn French and I thought it was cool to be a polyglot when I was little. I also realized how much I liked it when I started learning German
Q: Out of all the languages, why did you pick French?
A: I chose French because my mom used to speak it. So I wanted to as well.
Q: What other languages are you learning, or want to learn?
A: I am currently learning French, obvi, German, Croatian, a little bit of Spanish and Latin and I only hope to keep going!
Q: How do you feel about being the president of two language clubs?
A: Although the clubs weren’t as active as I would have liked, I am still so very grateful that I was able to be president for both the French club and my own. It really validated my love of languages.
Q: Do you want to study language in college?
A: YES! I want to study linguistics, which is the study of languages itself, and hopefully minor in a few languages. I’m so excited. Keep an eye on the Guinness book of world records because I might have an entry for most languages spoken in a few years 😉
While Brooke has left her language-loving legacy on Rosary, we cannot wait to see what she accomplishes in the future at UCI and beyond!
