As the track season comes to an end, it’s time to share the moments that made us laugh and the memories that are unforgettable. Although we had our banquet last week to get our athletic awards, I thought it would be fun to hand out some unique awards to girls on the team. Without further ado, here are the unconventional awards for the 2024 track season:
My earliest memory of Lainey Goldstein ’24 is during our freshman year. During one of her first 400 races, Lainey allegedly saw a backpack in her lane and had to jump over it, so she was given the “Most Likely to Hallucinate During a Race” Award.
The “Most Likely to Never Have Her Running Shoes” Award goes to the one and only Milan Smith ‘24. Milan has forgotten her running shoes and spikes for practice at least once a month for the past 4 years. She is notorious for leaving her shoes at meets all across California. She leaves her mark everywhere she goes!
The “Sneakiest Napper” Award is given to sophomore Justine Wilson. In between races, you can find her wrapped up in a blanket and passed out under the tent, but sometimes you can’t find her at all. She will sometimes sneak away for extra peace and quiet. Justine will find a way to sleep if it’s hot, cold, or even 5 minutes before she runs.
The “Best Pre-Race Pep Talk” Award goes to sophomore Caleigh Steward for not only her amazing prayers but for the way she hypes everyone up with her positive attitude. When I stress before my race, Caleigh is there to crack all the wrong jokes at the wrong time and it never fails to make me laugh.
The “Most Dramatic Relay Baton Pass” Award goes to senior Sol Lee. At the CIF Finals, the baton exchange between Justine and Sol was unsuccessful. This resulted in a disqualification.
Our beloved senior thrower, Sara Garcia, is bestowed the “Academic Weapon” Award. Sara will continue her education at Cornell University and is the smartest athlete on the track team. I’m going to miss yelling “GBR SARA” across the field to the throwing pit.
My personal favorite is the “Flame Broiler #1 Customer” award. This one goes to the girl who gets Flame Broiler before every meet, and who single-handedly keeps the business alive: Elena Saenz ’24.
Last but not least, the “Fastest to the Snack Table” Award goes to myself. About 2 years ago, I brought a sandwich from the snack table to the starting line as I was about to get in the blocks to race. Did I throw up after? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely, because how could I pass it up?!
Each of these awards highlights the unforgettable moments that made this season so special. Congratulations to all our awardees!
