As the senior class quickly approaches the graduation season, it is time to honor the students who have received the highest academic honors! Valedictorian Megan Martinez and Salutatorians Sophia Long and Melanie Kamel have been crowned the top scholars of the Class of 2024. I asked them some juicy questions to better understand how these seniors reacted to and prepared for this honor.
Megan Martinez:
Q: What was your reaction to this announcement?
A: It was definitely shock and excitement. I was surrounded by a group of girls who have consistently supported me throughout high school and it was really nice to share this honor with them. It was such a wonderful experience.
Q: What advice would you give other Royals who have a similar goal?
A: Stay driven. You will constantly face hardships and challenges. It can feel hard and devastating, but it helps in learning to grow and find out who you are. The biggest advice I would give is to find who you are and what you love to do. All that I have achieved in these past four years is a reflection of the experiences and relationships I’ve built. My love of learning has shaped me into the woman I am today.
Q: What do you think made you stand out to receive this honor?
A: My dedication. A lot of the accolades I have received have been a reflection of who I am and my character. I also think developing relationships with teachers is a big part of maintaining support throughout high school and helps me succeed. Being open to feedback and criticism has not only helped me become a stronger student but also a better person. Lastly, finding a love for both humanities and STEM has helped me stand out as a holistic woman.
Melanie Kamel:
Q: What was your reaction to this announcement?
A: When they announced Valedictorian and Salutatorian, I was definitely surprised, but also immediately relieved since this was another testament to all the work I’ve put in at Rosary.
Q: What advice would you give other Royals who have a similar goal?
A: Honestly, I never had the goal of being either Valedictorian or Salutatorian. My goal was to genuinely just do my best in everything I do, yet keep a balance between my academic life, social life, and work life. However, if this is truly your goal, my biggest advice is to not be intimidated by “hard” classes or “a lot” of coursework. Genuinely, you are capable of so much, and you usually don’t give yourself enough credit for what you can achieve. Put your best foot forward, but also focus on what you genuinely enjoy learning because the best way to avoid burnout is to love what you learn. Above all, though, please keep a balance. Don’t miss out on too many memories!
Q: What do you think made you stand out to receive this honor?
A: Well, taking 12 APs and getting straight As was probably helpful, but also my positions in clubs such as Mock Trial, Robotics, the Interact Club, and getting selected for Girls State also contributed to my involvement at Rosary.
Sophia Long:
Q: What was your reaction to this announcement?
A: I genuinely did not think I was going to get it. I was truly stressed out. I was so shocked and happy. It was such a surreal moment.
Q: What advice would you give other Royals who have a similar goal?
A: If you just are unapologetically yourself and let your natural capabilities shine through, then that will carry you through to your goal. Put in the time and work, but do not burn yourself out over it because then it won’t make the experience worth, it in my opinion. Overall, don’t force anything, and focus on balance.
Q: What do you think made you stand out to receive this honor?
A: I am someone who genuinely enjoys learning new things and pushing myself. I enjoy discussions, critical thinking, and solving problems. I think my intrinsic love for learning and growing my mind greatly contributed to my receiving this honor.
Everyone is so proud of these seniors, especially our wonderful administration.
Dr. Pautsch shares kind words about these three seniors: “We are so excited about the valedictorian and salutatorians who will represent the class of 2024. All three young women regularly demonstrate that excellence in academics and life is possible. The accomplishments of these young women along with the entire Class of 2024 are outstanding. I am proud of the class and the teachers who have guided them on their Rosary journey.”
Mrs. O’Campo ‘02 lovingly describes these students: “Watching Megan, Melanie, and Sophia grow and achieve so much over their four years at Rosary fills us with immense pride. Their determination, resilience, leadership, and commitment to their faith are commendable. We are excited to see them thrive in college and excel in all they do. Many blessings on their next chapter, and may they shine bright!”
Fellow senior tigers could not be happier for them. Isabella Walker ‘24 shares, “It is so cool to see how much each one of these girls has grown. I am so excited to see what is in store for each of them!”
