This past Friday, the Comedy Sportz team said goodbye to their senior team players: Donnie Sarabia, Sydney O’Blenes, Matthew Ghebrial, and the people writing this article, Mia Kennedy and Mandy Puga.
The senior match was held at the Servite Theater and was said to be the funniest in history. A large group of seniors from both Rosary and Servite came in support of the last game of the year.
Audience member Riley Martinez ‘24 said, “Throughout the entire match, I was laughing so hard and making a lot of good memories with my friends. It wasn’t until the graduation music started to play and the bows that I realized I have never felt more proud of my fellow seniors to see them perform for the last time.”
Servite senior Michael Schirmer, who also watched the match, states, “This was one of the best matches I’ve ever been to. The five seniors working together made for some of the funniest moments in Comedy Sportz.”
Now onto the senior players! Co-Manager Donnie Sarabia said, “I loved Comedy Sportz because of all the different opportunities it has given me. It also has made me into a quicker thinker, a better actor, a stronger leader, and a more confident public speaker. It was so much fun to be a part of this team and meet some of the best people I know.”
Even though we are first-time players, here are our final thoughts on Comedy Sportz:
Mia Kennedy: “Comedy Sportz was something I was interested in doing since I first joined Trinitas my sophomore year, and I was so excited (and also absolutely terrified) to finally be part of it. Although I was nervous leading up to the final match, one of the biggest things I love about this team is the level of support we have for each other, and it was that support that ultimately made that final match so special for me. I care about the team so much, and I will definitely miss it.”
Mandy Puga: “Being a part of Comedy Sportz was one of the best theater decisions I’ve ever made (shoutout to Matt for basically forcing me to join). I went from going every other Friday to watch the matches to sitting on the bench waiting to perform another improv skit. Comedy Sportz was such an amazing, fun, and positive experience, and I am so glad I joined.”
Finally, other Co-Manager Servite senior Matthew Ghebrial expressed, “Since joining the team my sophomore year, Comedy Sportz has helped me to outgrow my shell and allowed me to simply just have a good time. I have been on the team longer than any of the other seniors, so this last match was very emotional for me. I don’t usually cry, but as I was hugging the other seniors after the match ended, it was hard to keep in the tears. I think though, one of the most meaningful events of the night was texting last year’s seniors after the match and hearing their encouragement and welcome to the alumni gang. My Comedy Sportz journey is one that I will never forget and contributed to who I am today.”
While Comedy Sportz might just be a silly after-school theater extracurricular, for the Comedy Sportz team, it meant a lot more. From late-night Yogurtland outings to hours of improv and laughter, we can safely agree that it was one of the best decisions we’ve made in our seventeen years of life.
To anyone who may be considering joining the team, do it! It’s an opportunity not only to grow in confidence and leadership, but also to meet some really cool people and make some awesome memories. We love you, Comedy Sportz, and we’ll miss you!
