Everyone knows games like Wordle and Connections are popular among Rosary students, but did you know Rosary’s very own math teacher Mr. Clough is a big fan of these games too?! Despite his 31 year career crunching the numbers, Mr. Clough recently developed an infatuation with these English games, even completing them with his students.
Q: What got you into word games?
A: It was seniors Isabella Montano, Siena Lopez, and Mallory Mojica–Ye (myself) who asked if I had ever done Wordle after we played Wordscapes on my phone. I was looking for something that was going to challenge me.
Q: What is your favorite New York Times game to play and why?
A: The Wordle or the Connections. Today I got skunked on Connections. I knew the purple one. It had something to do with the seating.
Q: What are your strategies for winning these games?
A: For the Wordle, I’ve stolen impressive starter words from my students. My go-to words are stair and tears. I think audio is clever, shoutout to Siena Lopez.
Q: If you were to create a Connections game, what would one of the categories be?
A: Definitely one all about Rosary. Since I’ve been here for 31 years, I know a thing or two about the academy.
Q: If you were to create a Wordle, what would it be?
A: I think Siena’s word audio because it would be really hard.
Q: Is there anything else you have to say about the games?
A: I think everyone should play these word games. It’s a good way to start the day, and it’s a challenge. I also love it because it is a great way to bond with my students.
It’s clear Mr. Clough is a real contender when it comes to these word games. Even Ms. Barclay, who’s hard to impress, was moved by the news that Mr. Clough plays these games: “I didn’t think he had it in him. The guy is just full of surprises. What’s next? What’s next indeed?”
If you play any word games, b sure to stop by the mighty 112 and ask him how the Wordle and Connections went that day.
