The social studies department recently welcomed a new long-term substitute teacher, Ms. Marzolf. If you haven’t already seen her in the hallways with her coffee and tote, she is just as cool as she looks. She is taking over the two sophomore World History classes as well as Honors World History.
Q: What made you want to teach history?
I have always really enjoyed history as a subject throughout the entirety of my life although I originally went to college with the intent of becoming a nurse (crazy to think, I know!). I was deeply inspired and motivated to make the switch to becoming a history major as a result of one of my college history professors. Her knowledge motivated me to expand my historical understanding of these subjects even further, and I ultimately changed my major shortly after. I, too, wanted to be able to lecture to an audience about history.
In addition, I have a deep love for ephemera of all sorts from the past and had the pleasure of growing up with antiques (thanks to my mom) my whole life. Changing my major from nursing to history is one of the best decisions I ever made.
Q: Why did you choose Rosary?
I would say I had the pleasure of being chosen by Rosary. I applied for a subbing position and had some knowledge of the school because of a mutual friend, and voila! I got a call sometime later and was offered the opportunity of being your long-term history sub!
Q: What hobbies do you enjoy?
Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, hiking, listening to music, and collecting vintage vinyl and cassettes. I don’t know if this counts as a hobby, but I also love trying new coffee and shops. I’m a bit of a coffee fanatic.
Q: Do you have any pets?
I do have pets! I have two French Bulldog/Pug mixes: their names are Frankie and Frannie. They are both super friendly and love any and all attention from visitors. Frankie will turn six this June and so will Frannie in October. I love them to death despite having to listen to their outrageous snoring every night.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
I find it hard to describe myself, personally. I can, instead, describe how others would initially describe myself. Oftentimes, I am told I have an old soul. I think out of all the ways in which someone could perceive me, that might be the biggest compliment. I love all things old; I drive a classic car, and all my furniture is Victorian. I think it is pretty safe to say I actually might have an old soul. I would also describe myself as being overly optimistic and I am extremely determined.
Q: What’s your favorite music genre and artist?
I love a wide variety of genres; however, if I had to narrow it down and only choose one category, it would definitely be music from the early to late punk period. Specifically, I like to listen to anything from roughly around 1974-1988ish (or a little later). Some of my favorite bands include Television, The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, The Cramps, New York Dolls, Bauhaus, Brian Eno, Talking Heads, Adolescents, Patti Smith, John Cale The Feelies, Elvis Costello, and Iggy Pop. I currently am reading a book called “From the Velvets to The Voidoids: The Birth of American Punk Rock.” I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to music.
Royals are grateful to have such a amazing teacher and are so excited to get to know more about Ms. Marzolf. Be sure to give her a warm welcome when you see her around campus!
