This year, I discovered my new favorite food, the sumo orange. The sumo orange is a beautiful mixture of sweet and sour with a decadent texture. Senior Paloma Borsari also shares her love for sumo oranges: “I have a sumo orange in my lunch everyday and I am currently eating one. I am seriously addicted to this fruit. They are the best tasting thing EVER.” She is right they are really good.
Harper Clark ‘26 also agrees: “Without at least one sumo orange a day I will be grumpy, Emma can attest, if I don’t get a sumo in my system, you won’t hear the end of it. Emma also won’t hear the end of it if she doesn’t peel my orange, either.” It’s true, without a sumo a day, there are side effects – Harper experiences grumpiness while I deal with regret.
In all honesty, Harper got me on the sumo train. One lunch, Harper asked me to peel her orange and as a tax, I took half, and I’ve never been the same after. That day, I made my mom go to the store with me and get some, and now my entire family is hooked.
Although the taste is amazing, the physical appearance can be a little daunting. Sara Garcia ‘24 has a strong opinion about the way sumo oranges look: “These Sumo oranges,’ if that’s what you want to call them, are grotesque and bring shame to the orange community. One day, we’ll find out that they were alien eggs all along (they sure look like it) and guess who will be right? ME.” Even though its ugly, it is delicious, it’s also really easy to peel so it gets extra points.
Basically, if you have not gathered it, I love sumo oranges and even though they look scary, everyone should go to the store and buy one today – you will be hooked.
