As of March 13, 2024, TikTok’s reign over social media is rumored to be over because of a bill passed in the House of Representatives. To be more specific, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act is the bill that endangers GenZ’s beloved app. This bill restricts apps from distributing, maintaining, or providing internet hosting services controlled by foreign adversaries (in this case, China).
American screenagers everywhere are outraged at this news. GiGi Coo ‘24 states, “If TikTok gets banned, I will have a slight mourning period, but I will probably adapt to Instagram reels.” Junior Jazzy Sandoval expresses, “I’ll be kind of sad because I’ll probably have to do homework in my free time now.” However, concerned readers, rest assured: there is still hope for this beloved app.
Luckily, this restriction will not apply if the app is separated from the foreign adversary and makes changes that are approved by the President. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi believes the best way to save the dying app is to separate it from its Shanghai-based parent company, ByteDance.
Even if TikTok comes to an end, the world will not. Senior Alyssa Ramirez comments, “Honestly, the death of TikTok won’t affect me that much because I don’t have it. So it is not a big loss for me. Our generation will learn to live with the loss if it happens.”
No one should panic about this headline just yet though. Being educated and informed about these topics is what’s key. Don’t say goodbye to the app just yet; there is still time to live vicariously on TikTok through short vlogs, shopping hauls, “get ready with me” videos, and so much more.
