Like every typical bored senior with a Spotify Premium account, I’ve recently gotten into making a bunch of playlists that relate to specific things that are going on in my life, whether that be college decisions, parties, people, or just songs that remind of the beach. So, I thought it would be a fun idea to relate songs to a couple of my teachers! I picked out songs beforehand that reminded me of them, and then asked them what they thought their song would be.
With all of her rowdy classes, I thought Ms. Barclay ’94 would definitely classify under metal music. I do not listen to much metal, but when scrolling through a couple playlists, I decided that any Metallica song would be fitting. But when asked, she said, “I think I’d be ‘What Does the Fox Say’ by Ylvis.” Alrighty then, in retrospect, this funky song does seem to be just like Ms. Barclay.
Next up is Mrs. D’Alba, I thought she’d like a very Indie/Soft song such as “Relax” by Vacations or a Taylor Swift song, specifically from her folklore album. But she disagreed and told me that her song would actually be “Don’t Worry be Happy,” by the Beatles. Mrs. D’Alba is always happy so I’d have to agree that this is her song.
When I asked Mr. Lyons, he told me his would be “It’s a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. He explained that Armstrong was his inspiration in playing the saxophone when he was younger and really inspired him into playing jazz music. I was not very shocked when he told me this, as Mr. Lyons is currently a bass player in a band and very musically talented. I had already thought he would choose some type of jazz music, like Frank Sinatra. I think that his song would probably be “I Believe in You” since he motivates and inspires all of his students. Honestly, if you have had Mr. Lyons as a teacher, the song I picked for him is obvious.
The last teacher I asked was Mrs. Ward. I assumed she would be some type of underground rock music since her class presentations and slides give off those vibes. Her cool style also gives ‘cool girl rock’ so I was very confident in myself when I chose “School” by Nirvana. I wasn’t too far off since she said her song would be, “Let it Be” by the Beatles. I agree with her, even though this is softer rock. Mrs. Ward does let it be, no matter how many times girls miss class due to senioritis.
Honestly, it’s really fun to identify things, people, or whatever with songs. It adds a lot of depth and emotions, so I definitely recommend taking some time out of your day and making a playlist.
