High school is more than just a place of learning – it’s a community where students grow, thrive, and shape their futures. And at our dear Rosary Academy, students are known by many to be full of bold, creative, and innovative ideas.
With this in mind, the Royal Reporter has decided to ask students across our campus about their desires for new initiatives and revivals of past traditions to enrich our school experience. From lunch tables, to new celebrations, to hair dye, their suggestions reflect a collective aspiration to make our school an even better place.
Without further ado, here are a few of the ideas from our “Rosary Suggestion Box” that current students are passionate about bringing to life in the near future:
1. The first idea we received was from Valeria Avila ’24, saying she “would love to see the Rosary lunch tables make a comeback.” The Rosary lunch tables were removed in 2020 after the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, since they required users to sit in close proximity to one another. But now, Val argues that since the COVID pandemic is officially over, they should be brought back to their rightful home in the Rosary quad!
2. Our next recommendation comes from sophomore Brigid LeVecke, who stated that she would love to see the “Clash of the Classes” tradition come back to life. To refresh our memory, Brigid explains that, “the Clash of the Classes is when each grade makes a skit and they perform it at a rally. Think of it as a little Red and Gold but with 4 teams. It looks like so much fun!” Having been removed from scheduled events for the past 2 years, this beloved tradition would surely be a hit with the classes today, as it promotes class-wide student collaboration, creativity, and school spirit!
3. Furthermore, another suggestion the Royal Reporter staff got was from junior Elizabeth Astorga, who excitedly proposes the imposition of more opportunities for student self expression. In her suggestion, Elizabeth writes, “I think Rosary students should be allowed to dye our hair non-natural colors.” She thinks that this will give Rosary students a chance to express themselves in a new and unique way even while wearing a uniform!
4. Another great suggestion was proposed by Rosary freshman Bella Ambata, who hopes to see Rosary celebrate more religious and cultural holidays during the regular school year. She presents her ideas, saying, “I thought the roses for Mary for the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe were beautiful, but I believe we can do so much more to educate our student body on both the culture and religious background behind this day and other holidays like it! For example, we could hand out pan de sal (Filipino bread) for Flores de Mayo (the Philippines celebrates this day with a huge festival for Mary) and teach people about our namesake, Our Lady of the Rosary.” Celebrations like these will allow Royals to not observe various holidays from other cultures, but also enrich their lives with the experiences and traditions that come along with them!
5. And last, but certainly not least, our final idea was brought about by senior Siena Lopez. Siena says that she would like to see a “Student of the Month” recognition/award done either on the morning announcements or at school-wide assemblies. She notes that “there are so many talented and hardworking girls at this school that I think deserve to be recognized for all of their accomplishments!” We agree with Siena, and would love to see these girls be celebrated in a public, community-wide setting for all that they do at Rosary.
So, as our first deep-dive into the Royal suggestion box draws to a close, one truth emerges clear and resolute: the power of student innovation and creativity knows no bounds. The ideas generated by our student body are a testament to their passion and commitment to making a difference within our greater Rosary community.
If you have a suggestion that you would like to see implemented at Rosary Academy, email Mrs. Barclay ([email protected]) or any Royal Reporter Staff member to be featured in future “Rosary Suggestion Box” articles!
