On Saturday at 10:50 am, the Rosary water polo team will face off Northwood in the CIF championship game.
Two years ago, this idea was unimaginable. The 2021-2022 season resulted in the team losing most of their games, with their record being 4-12. Last year, while competing in Division 5, the Royals went 19-15, making it all the way to the championship CIF game. Despite losing that game by one point, the season was a huge accomplishment. The team has climbed their way up from Division 5 to Division 4 and is once again a recognizable force in girls’ water polo.
The team is hoping to come back with vengeance and win it all this Saturday, and they have been putting in the time and work to do so. Senior Spencer Thiemann says, “We all have put in so much time and effort that got us to where we are now. We have earned and deserve this win. I’m ready to get my ring!”
Former Rosary water polo coach Ms. Hermosillo ’14 also explains the work the team has put in: “It never felt like our season was done after losing last years’ game in the finals. The girls came back from that loss with more commitment, dedication, and persistence than they realized they had and have been non-stop since.”
The players and coaches are not the only ones who have seen the significant growth of the team from the 2021-2022 season to now. Teachers and fans are also talking about the teams progress. Water polo fan and Athletic Director Ms. Lanctot describes this growth: “Every game I have seen this year, I’ve been in awe about how much improvement I have seen even from last year. The maturity, game tactics and skill level have increased substantially. I am impressed by the whole team’s work ethic and determination to make it this far.”
