It’s that time of year again! Red and Gold posters fly on the stairwell, the bathrooms are decorated in arrays of color, and every single Party City in Orange County is sold out of all things red and gold. In a few weeks, the girls of Rosary will invade the Servite campus and perform for hours on end before one team is crowned champions. We know our Royals adore the Red and Gold season, but what do our Servite Friars think?
Besides the brothers and friends of Rosary girls, I would say not too many Friars know about Red and Gold because Servite does not “advertise” it in the same way Rosary does. Jake Ratzlaff ‘24 said, “I haven’t ever been to Red and Gold but I’m probably gonna go this year ’cause it seems pretty cool, and I think it’ll be nice.”
I think both schools can promote more collaboration between girls and boys; after all, we are brothers and sisters who should be supporting each other at more than just sporting events. Senior James Ramirez comments, “I know it’s a musical and that’s it, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it.” While James is sort of right, Red and Gold allows us to show off our talents and is a real reflection of our school spirit. It’s more than just a musical—it’s a lifestyle.
My brother, Luke Sorensen ‘26, has been to 4 (and counting) Red and Gold performances and loves going every year: “Red and Gold? It is super cool, and my sisters get excited about it. But I feel like it might cause some beef though because friends are on different teams.”
Jack Wright ‘26 shared, “Everyone gets really into it and I think that’s cool to have something that can bring a whole school closer together.” Now that’s the positivity we like to hear! When asked what category he would be in, Jack said, “I’m a good singer, but I’ll choose drill.” Now I’ve been to the football games and have seen the team sing the “Salve Regina,” and I think the entire football team should be in the choral category.
Alex Brambila ‘24 explained, “I think it’s so cool how you guys can express yourself through a show. And I would be on drill for sure.” I might not take that performance seriously, because watching boys try to lift each other for stunts while dancing to Rihanna would make me laugh.
Matthew Ghebrial ‘24 mentioned, “I’ve had a bunch of girls try to explain to me the concept but I never really understood how it works until I watched it last year. I think Red and Gold is awesome and I wish that Servite had an event that united the student body as well as Red and Gold.”
I think Servite should start their version of Red and Gold, and sophomore Caleigh Steward agrees: “If Servite were to start their own Red & Gold, I would go see it because it’s funny to see boys try to dance, they’re pretty uncoordinated and stiff, it’d probably be a mess.”
Red and Gold, while stressful, is one of the best times of the year for our Royals, and our Servite brothers should come out to show support. Tickets go on sale soon, so make sure to buy your Friar friend a seat for the show!
