Sunday night was iconic—it was the 66th Grammy Awards, which we renamed Taylor Swift Night due to her domination of the music industry. Other artists won some well-deserved awards, but Sunday was for the Swifties.
Sunday morning, Taylor’s profile picture on all social media platforms turned black and white, colors reminiscent of Taylor’s sixth studio album, “reputation.” At this point, Swifties were confident the release of “reputation (Taylor’s Version)” would be announced that night at the Grammys. This theory was later reinforced when Taylor’s official website showed a fake error message in “reputation” colors.
Taylor showed up to the Grammys in a black and white outfit to match the color scheme of “reputation” to a T. She also wore a necklace with a clock charm, and we took that as a hint since she announced her album “Midnights” (whose symbol is a clock) at another awards show in 2022. We might have been grasping at straws, but we’ve been ‘clowning,’ as social media calls it, since gray November.
Taylor was nominated for six Grammys, one of which was Best Pop Vocal Album. “Midnights” won the category, so we were sad Travis Kelce wasn’t present to cheer Taylor on; he was busy preparing for the Super Bowl this weekend.
In her acceptance speech, Taylor shared she had been keeping a secret from the Swifties for the past two years: she was saving a new album called “The Tortured Poets Department,” which comes out Friday, April 19.
We were absolutely thrilled, as was senior Siena Lopez: “When I was watching the Grammys and she announced the new album, I fell to the ground and started sobbing uncontrollably.” This is a completely valid response.
The news also shocked Alina Valencia ’27: “I was so excited! I was a little disappointed it wasn’t Rep TV, but I’m looking forward to her new music. I think the album is going to be very poetic, like ‘folklore.’ I’m looking forward to her collabs with Post Malone and with Florence and the Machine!”
Jaclyn Gonzalez ’26 shared her hopes for “The Tortured Poets Department”: “I hope Taylor’s new album has a similar vibe to ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore,’ but I would probably still love it even if she makes something completely different.” Taylor is truly her own genre and always kills it when she tries a new style.
The new album’s cover looks angsty, so we predict it will combine the artsy melancholy of “folklore” with the rage of “reputation” and “All Too Well (10 Minute Version).” In an interview, Joe Alwyn, Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, shared the title of his group chat with his friends—The Tortured Man Club—which is eerily similar to the new album’s title. “The Tortured Poets Department” will be scathing, and we are ready for it.
As if the announcement weren’t exciting enough, Taylor won her FOURTH Album of the Year Grammy, making her the only musician in history to do so. Each time she won, she set a new record: she has been the youngest to win, the first woman to win twice and three times, and now the first person to win four times.
Taylor Swift has some big things ahead: the Eras Tour just started back up, she’s expected at the Super Bowl, she’s releasing a new movie version of the Eras Tour on Disney+ on March 15, and she’s giving us a brand-new album in about two months. We’re wonderstruck, to say the least.
