The week of Winter Formal is here! Before Homecoming, I wrote an article about what songs should be played, and after attending, there are definitely some songs that should NOT be played. Here is a list of songs that would quickly empty the dance floor. If you happen to love these songs, sorry, you’re wrong (but in all seriousness, this entire article is a joke, so don’t take it too personally).
- “American Boy” by Estelle and Kanye West
- “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner
- “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen
- “Gangnam Style” by PSY
- “Rich Girl” by Gwen Stefani
- “Sugar” by Maroon 5
- “It’s Everyday Bro” by Jake Paul
- “Boy’s a liar Pt.2” by Pink Pantheress and Ice Spice
- “Juju on That Beat” by Zay Hilfigerrr
- “Conga!” by Miami Sound Machine
- “Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper (DJ, if you are reading this, please do not play this one)
- “ Macarena” by Los Del Rio
- “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men
- “Dance Monkey” by Tones & I
- “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma
- “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus
- “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars
- “YMCA” by Village People
Many Royals have strong opinions about songs they are tired of hearing at dances and do not want the DJ to play. Sophomore Andrea Salazar chimed in, saying, “If they play ‘Last Friday Night’ at Winter Formal, I’m walking off the dance floor. That song is SO overplayed. Anything by Katy Perry is an immediate no. “Watch Me Whip”—also a fat no. I feel like everyone tries to dance to it, but it’s been played so much that it’s just awkward. Also, sorry to country music fans, but I have never heard Zach Bryan or Luke Wallen or whatever his name is. No hate—I’m sure they are great people, but I would have no idea how to dance to that.”
Lainey Goldstein ‘24 commented, “I am so tired of the DJ playing ‘Payaso de Rodeo’ by Caballo Dorado. First, everyone has to leave the dance floor for the people who want to do the dance. Then, the song speeds up and goes on forever.”
Seniors Sara Garcia and Izzy Walker both agreed that Pitbull songs should be minimized at Winter Formal.
Sarah Quiros ‘24 also shared some songs she does not want to hear: “‘Firework’ by Katy Perry and ‘Starships’ by Nicki Minaj—both the songs are so overplayed.”
Another senior Brooke Skipton added, “If they play any kind of rap, I might lose it. I feel like you can’t dance to rap, and I do not want to be just standing in a mass the whole time.”
No matter what the DJ plays (hopefully none of these songs), Winter Formal should be a fun-filled night at the Nixon Library. If you do not have a ticket, it is not too late to buy one; the last day to purchase is Jan. 26.
