Over winter break, Rosary’s varsity soccer team competed in the Arizona Showcase and brought home the championship for the second year in a row.
On Dec. 26, Rosary Soccer ventured out in vans to Mesa, Arizona. Their trip consisted of four games to be played in order to defend their champion title from last year.
The first game they played was against Shadow Ridge High School. The Royals beat them 2-0, creating a great start to their tournament. Their next opponent was Arizona College Prep High School, where the Royals were victorious with a 5-1 win.
The Royals then secured their spot in the finals by beating Hamilton High School 3-0 in their third game. Senior McKinley Fregoso shares, “There was some pressure knowing we had to win, but I really got motivated after we met TikTok star Noah Beck. I felt like I couldn’t let him down.”
The morning of the championship game, the soccer team was preparing to take home their trophy. Ava Bernard ‘24 stated, “I went into the championship game with very high hopes. I knew that our team was capable of winning the tournament again and I was so excited to defend our title.” The Royals won the big game with a final score of 3-0. Senior captain Leah Gimenez stated, “I was so proud of our team. We worked so hard all season and it definitely paid off!”
Although the purpose of the trip was to compete and win the showcase, the Royals also enjoyed their off time around the hotel. The team enjoyed bonding before their first game through a funny white elephant gift exchange and also had lots of team lunches and dinners. Amaya Faison ‘26 expresses, “My favorite part of our off time was going shopping with our team at the mall. It was so much fun, and there were great sales too!”
Overall, the soccer team had great success in Arizona, and they are ready to bring the momentum into their Trinity League games. So far, they have tied Santa Margarita 1-1, lost to Mater Dei 1-0, and beat Orange Lutheran 4-0. Their next game is Tuesday, Jan. 16 against JSerra at Fullerton College. Come out and support Rosary soccer as they battle it out on the field.
