Lately, everyone I know has been taking a trip to the movie theaters due to the recent releases of “Wonka,” “Saltburn,” “Trolls Band Together,” and “Anyone but You.” Let’s see which movies are actually worth a $20 ticket.
Since I have not seen “Wonka,” I turned to our beloved Mrs. Davidson to get her thoughts on the movie: “It definitely met the expectation of being a prequel to the Gene Wilder version. Timothée just blew me away with his version of Willy Wonka. I really, really liked it.” Ava Fishman ’24 agreed with Mrs. Davidson that “Wonka” was a great movie. Ava shared, “I really enjoyed listening to the song ‘Sorry Noodle’ and seeing all of the creativity in the movie.” Mrs. Davidson and Ava Fishman have persuaded me to purchase a ticket to see “Wonka.”
On the other hand, I am on the fence about watching “Saltburn” because of the mixed reviews I have heard. Finley Hawkins ’24 explained, “There was no plot. It was a waste of my time. I do not recommend it.” Finley was obviously a harsh critic of the movie, but Spencer Thiemann ’24 felt the opposite: she loved the movie. She expressed her enjoyment of the film: “I enjoyed the plot and was shocked by the plot twist at the end. It wasn’t a usual movie, which made it very thought-provoking. I also think Saltburn was cast very well.” “Saltburn” has been getting much attention in the media recently, and I’ve heard nothing but mixed reviews. I might have to go watch “Saltburn” to figure out what side I stand on. But make sure to check with your parents before watching because it is rated R.
Junior Nikki Green and senior Nicole Elliott spent part of their winter breaks watching the new “Trolls” movie: “Trolls Band Together.” They told me that the movie was exactly what you’d expect from a “Trolls” movie: super fun, entertaining, and lighthearted. A big bonus in the movie is the amazing soundtrack, including the song “Better Place,” which has been popular and trending on TikTok.
Out of all the new movies, I have only seen “Anyone but You,” but it was so good I insisted on seeing it not once but twice over winter break. Freshmen Lexie Curtis and Rowan O’Connell also watched the movie over break. Lexie reported, “This movie is one of few that actually made me laugh out loud. Just ask Rowan; she will tell you I could not contain my laughter.” I can easily say I have yet to find someone who did not audibly laugh while watching this movie. Many have even said they predict “Anyone But You” will be the rom-com of the decade. And again, check with your parents first!
If you haven’t already, I suggest hitting up your local movie theater this weekend to catch up on all four new and popular movies.
