This past Sunday, actors and actresses from movies and TV shows gathered for the Golden Globe Awards, also known as the “biggest party in Hollywood” at the Beverly Hilton. From Taylor Swift’s outfit to Joy Koy’s monologue, our Royals had a lot to say about the highs and the lows of the award show.
Starting with the best red carpet looks, Margot Robbie stole the show with her hot pink dress inspired by the 1977 Superstar doll. Marissa Carbajal ‘24 shared her love for Robbie’s dress: “I was absolutely obsessed with Margot Robbie’s outfit, the pink was everything. I wasn’t expecting anything less from Barbie.”
Another iconic look was Taylor Swift’s custom Gucci gown. Senior Isabella Corte said, “I really liked the outfits on the red carpet, sspecially the outfit Taylor Swift was wearing. The green color reminded me of a group I like!” Again, Taylor Swift was a hit among our Royals. Marci Rau ‘24 expressed, “Taylor Swift’s outfit ATE. Jo Koy’s comment about Taylor Swift being shown too much at Chiefs games is clearly because he was jealous of her radiance that night.”
Comedian Jo Koy left the audience stunned with his opening speech where he made puzzling remarks about “Barbie,” Taylor Swift, and Kevin Costner. “Jo Koy clearly has never seen Barbie. He quite literally proved the point the movie was trying to make” said Sophia Baaklini ‘24. Koy specifically poked at Taylor Swift, “You know, we came on after a football doubleheader,” he said. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear. There’s just more to go here. Sorry about that.” Sophomore Gianna Sorensen added “ I hate Jo Koy. Taylor Swift wore green because ‘Reputation’ is coming out soon. Margot Robbie was one of the best dressed.” Gianna, I think we can all agree.
However, senior Lea Monroy took it one step further and tried to dissect the true meaning of the camera shot to Taylor after the comment: “Some people are making a huge deal about Taylor Swift’s reaction to Jo Koy’s joke about her, but all she did was sip her drink. Like I found it so weird how people were making it this big thing that she was so furious, but she literally wasn’t; she just didn’t find the joke funny.”
Onto the nominations! “Barbie” led the Golden Globes with nine nominations. The film won cinematic and box-office achievement, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won for best song for their track “What Was I Made For?” “Oppenheimer” took the award for best motion picture and put an end to the “Barbenheimer” feud. Lily Gladstone, star of the “Killers of the Flower Moon” film, made history by delivering her acceptance speech in the Blackfeet language to honor her Native American heritage. In the “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture” category, Robert Downey Jr., featured in “Oppenheimer,” won. Sorry Ryan Gosling, I guess you weren’t Ken-ough.
Two iconic moments occurred when first, Jennifer Lawrence mouthed to the camera “If I don’t win I’m leaving.” That gave the audience a laugh they needed. The second was when Emma Stone was announced as the award winner for “Best Actress in a Drama,” and Lawrence began to cheer for her friend. Talk about girls supporting girls! Senior Lainey Goldstein said this was her favorite moment of the night.
Senior Madison Roach shared her opinion on the night: “The Golden Globes were disappointing as most award shows tend to be. It usually isn’t about actually awarding art but more so about awarding the most popular people. There was some good though, like Jennifer Lawrence saying ‘If I don’t win, I’m leaving’ and then happily screaming for Emma Stone.” Our Royals’ biggest takeaway from Sunday night was that women supporting each other is truly the greatest win.
