Fueled by sugary snacks, Saturday team lunches, and baked goods from Connelly alumna and team coach Myra Juma, the Mock Trial team made it through hours of practice every week starting in August. Attorneys wrote, rewrote, and memorized detailed questions and long arguments, and witnesses prepared to respond to the wildest interrogations from other teams.
After competing against Pacific Academy, Corona del Mar High School, Trabuco Hills High School, and University High School with a 3-1 record, Rosary Mock Trial advanced to the playoffs as one of the top 16 teams in Orange County out of nearly 50.
While the team lost to Northwood High School in the first round of playoffs, the difference was only nine points, and the Royal attorneys and witnesses put up a great fight. Considering the majority of Rosary’s team is composed of newcomers, Mock Trial had an amazing season—many of our opponents were experienced, upperclassmen, or both.
Team co-captain and prosecution attorney Grace Raskopf ‘25 shared, “I’ve had so much fun getting to bond with all the girls on the team this year, especially those in other grades. I’m so proud of everything we accomplished, and I can’t wait to see where everyone goes in the years to come! Everyone has so much potential, and I’m excited to watch everyone grow even more both inside and outside the courtroom!”
Sophomore witness Kateri Hodge added, “My favorite part about the Mock Trial season was getting to meet new people and learning more about the legal system as well as getting to practice my acting skills.” All the time spent in Mock Trial has multiple benefits in areas like writing, public speaking, art, and collaboration; there’s a role for everyone!
After two years on the team so far, I can say some of my favorite memories and friendships are with my Mock Trial teammates since we spend so much time together. A special shout-out goes to the pretrial attorney squad (Jaclyn Gonzalez ’26, Marci Rau ’24, and Melanie Kamel ’24)—I love our laughs, Spotify playlist, and unhinged stories so much.
The 23–24 Mock Trial season has undoubtedly been one for the books! Congratulations to the entire Mock Trial team on a successful run. Next year, I’m certain we’ll make it even further!
