Rosary’s counselors always do amazing jobs getting to know the Royals, but let’s take some time to learn more about those behind Rosary’s support system.
Below, I interviewed social emotional and academic counselor Ms. Marquez. She has been a part of the Rosary community for three years and has made a positive impact on many Royals in her time here.
Q: What made you want to work at Rosary?
Working in public school was not my dream. After attending Catholic School most of my life and attending a Christian graduate school, I realized how much I was missing the spiritual component in my work while working in a public school. Working at a Catholic school is a calling. It is about helping to form the hearts of future saints. There was something about Rosary that felt like it was where I was supposed to be, and learning that Rosary had Kairos was what sealed the deal for me!
Q: What influenced you to become a counselor?
In high school, many people would talk through problems with me; these were not always people I was necessarily close friends with. I just seemed to be that person people would open up to. It was in high school that I saw how important it was for teens to have supportive people in their lives. My mom being a dean at my high school also influenced me to be a counselor. I saw how much kids need love and encouragement. Growing up, I was blessed with a loving and supportive “village” of family, friends, teachers, and coaches. I felt the calling to work in a field where I could be that “biggest fan” – and counseling fit that desire. I think we need more people willing to remind those around them of how loved they are. To remind them that who they are is exactly what the world needs!
Q: What are your favorite hobbies?
Cooking/Baking – especially sourdough/natural yeast bread recipes (bread, cinnamon rolls, pretzels, etc.)
Q: Favorite music genre?
I do not have just one. I’ll listen to all kinds of music just as long as it is not yelling or cussing at me. My Spotify top songs are really funny. It ranges from Jesus Jams to R&B/Hip Hop to Country to Showtunes. My most played album was SIX, the Musical. Right now though… it’s Christmas Music!
Q: What is your favorite TV series?
I loved the series Commander in Chief. But I guess I would say the Soap Opera, General Hospital. I’ve been watching GH for almost 20 years now that I think about it!
Q: What advice do you find yourself giving to students most often?
I think I say some version of “you are so smart, so beautiful, and so so loved” the most. But a recommendation I find myself offering even more often is to focus on the basics: getting plenty of sleep and fueling your body well with good foods and water. And more often than not, I offer a hug before a student leaves. Hugs save lives!
Q: How do you like Rosary?
I love it! Though at first, I wasn’t sure about the whole all-girl thing, because I loathe girl drama. But thankfully, that has not been a big issue; I haven’t missed being in a co-ed school environment. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work at a school with so many wonderful humans.
If you have a tough day, Ms. Marquez is always in the counseling office with a warm smile to help. So, if you see her around campus, be sure to say hello!
