From watching the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to feasting on potatoes, turkey, corn, and stuffing, there are many ways to celebrate this beloved holiday. For some Royals, Friars, and teachers, the upcoming break will be stuffed with unique Thanksgiving traditions.
To start, my favorite Thanksgiving tradition is when all my cousins and I make gingerbread houses after eating a delicious Thanksgiving feast to welcome the Christmas season.
Lainey Goldstein ‘24 celebrates Thanksgiving on Black Friday, and not on Thanksgiving Day in order to accommodate her large family and their chaotic schedules. Lainey stays at the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite with her family, a tradition that has been going on since she was three. She describes the hotel: “It is super old, creepy, and haunted. And it doesn’t have cellular data or wifi.” How terrifying!
Servite senior Jake Ratzlaff shares his Thanksgiving Day traditions: “I wake up every morning and help my mom make pies while watching the Macy’s parade. Then I go to my grandparents’ house with all of my family and we watch football and have dinner together. I’ve been doing that since I can remember and it’s a holiday I look forward to every year, this year especially.”
In contrast to the traditional Thanksgiving meal, Senior Arianna Rosales and her family have a unique approach to this beloved holiday. Arianna elaborates, “Every year my family and I go to Las Vegas and eat at Benihana on Thanksgiving”
Mrs. Ward offers her fun Thanksgiving plans: “I am going to the High Sierras. It is so beautiful and relaxing. I think we all needed a break.”
Jacee Baumann ‘24 spends her Thanksgiving break on vacation with her family. She explains, “I go to the mountains with my family and friends for the weekend. There’s always a ton of us there. Something cool we do is we go around and say something we are thankful for and do a prayer.”
Whatever way family celebrates Thanksgiving, it’s important to spend time with our loved ones, appreciate what we have, and give back to the community. Happy Thanksgiving Royals!
