Every year when November rolls around, the slump kicks in. This year it seems to be hitting a bit harder. Everyone on campus can feel the weird vibe. Attendance rates have declined. Everything is off. Here’s a deep dive into why our campus just feels so strange.
Let’s be honest, the burn-out is real. Four months into school and many Royals already seem to be checked out. Maya Ginter ‘24 claims her senioritis began a while back, but now it’s worse than ever: “I’m honestly so done with school. Well, I’ve kind of been done since like last year. But all I want to do is figure out where I’m going to college and hang out with my friends.”
Junior Mieke Van-Dijk has been officially diagnosed with early-onset senioritis. The overwhelmingness of school is starting to get to her: “I think I feel so over school because I am constantly busy with homework, studying, and balancing extracurriculars. I barely have any free time.”
It really seems as though a plague has hit our school like a truck. In just this week, everybody has suddenly become ill. Whether it be Covid, allergies, or the common cold, the Royal plague is real.
Sam Nocella ‘24 has contracted whatever horrendous virus is spreading around campus. She attended a total of one class period this week, meaning she was at school for just over an hour. She explains, “I was so sick and felt awful. For the first few days, I rotted in my bed until I finally started to be a little more productive.”
Senior Kylan Castillo also had to take a few days off because of her sickness she contracted while on Kairos: “At first I was really sick and felt miserable. But thankfully I quickly started to feel better and got to take time to finish up my college applications.” Kylan has been at school an impressive two out of the five days this week.
Hmmm…it seems these seniors all seem to be getting sick around that nasty November 1 deadline.
As for the rest of the school, maybe it is just the weather changing. The gloomy, foggy weather can definitely weigh down the mood on campus. DimiAna Daskalakis ‘24 desperately wishes it were summer: “The only parts of winter I like are my birthday and Christmas. Other than that, I hate winter.”
It’s a rough time on campus for many students but soon we’ll be back to normal. For now, stay safe out there and don’t let your attendance drop too much.
