It is Friday the 13th. School has ended, and the journalism class is getting ready to depart from Rosary to the local Halloween carnival to write an article. Ms. Barclay grabs the keys and leads the girls to the Rosary van. Everyone piles in with their notebooks and pencils, making their way to the carnival located in downtown Anaheim. When they arrive, they hop out of the van, giddy with excitement and ready to write the next Royal Reporter feature.
Kit brings everyone together and says, “Okay team, here’s the game plan- we’re here to explore the carnival, have A LITTLE BIT of fun, but ultimately write an article. We are here for a reason so try not to get distracted.” Christina V., affirming what Kit says, adds, “Barclay is already mad at us, so let’s make sure to get this done and to not play around.”
Mia K. whispers to Cait S. off to the side, “I’m so stressed, I need a break! Let’s go get a snack or something.”
Cait agrees, “Yeah! We’ll be fast, let’s go.”
Mia and Cait are two of the copy editors for journalism. With the overwhelming amount of articles they have to check, they just wanted a nice snack and a break from the stressful job of being in journalism. As Cait and Mia walk off to get a snack, they get distracted and spot a red balloon floating in the distance. They follow the balloon as it lures them into a dark, abandoned circus tent. Once they enter the center of the tent, they hear a childlike giggle in the middle of the room. Then they see a doll holding the red balloon. They decide to walk towards it, and out of nowhere a hand is shoved over their mouths and noses. Everything turned to black.
As journalism continues to walk on, Gigi has a brilliant idea for an article and exclaims, “Ah ha! Perfect! Hey Mia, remind me to write an article on Perfect Fall Fits. Mia? Guys, where’s–”
“Hey guys look!” Christina interjects.
“A clown in a dunk tank. You can’t get any creepier than that! Someone write that down to include in the article,” Kit says as they continue to swiftly move throughout the carnival.
Marci and Makayla R. stop in front of the dunk tank and pick up a bean bag, chucking it at the target. The clown drops into the water as the two celebrate, but what they don’t notice are the clowns creeping up behind them.
Suddenly, there is a loud crash heard on the other side of the carnival, and everyone decides to go investigate. While everyone is distracted, though, no one notices Marci and Makayla being gagged and dragged away. While trying to discover the source of the sound, Kit and Christina spot a corn maze that no one seemed to notice before. When they approach the maze, the group encounters a group of clowns surrounding the perimeter– which is odd because the fun house is on the other side of the carnival.
The clowns stare at Kit and Christina creepily for a moment as they walk into the corn maze. Kit says, “Okay guys, this is our last thing we will conquer because you all keep getting distracted.” They walk in and disperse in different directions throughout the maze. Kit and Christina turn down different pathways bumping into people every so often. As they continue throughout the maze they start to notice they’re alone. A swift figure turns the corner in front of them and they follow close behind. They see a cloaked figure lying on the floor, and carefully approach the body.
They removed the cloak to see Ms. Barclay stabbed with a sharpened piece of candy corn in her chest. They scream out in terror, as the clowns that surrounded the maze at the start approach them. Kit and Christina fall back onto the ground in fear. The clowns surround them, and Kit questions, “Who are you? Why are you doing this?” All of the clowns take off their masks, revealing themselves to be the Mystery in Fiction class.
Riley M. steps forward, holding an old bloody ax, and says “You got sweatshirts and we didn’t. Time to join your class.” Then she swings her ax, and the Journalism class is gone for good. On Monday morning, the Mystery in Fiction class can be found wearing the Journalism sweatshirts sitting in the seats of Room 208, enjoying their new Rosary merch.
