Every October, pink floods storefronts in the form of products, attire, and much more. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an essential celebration for many people, especially those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer along with their supporters. During the month of October, we at Rosary Academy show our support in a variety of ways in an effort to bring attention to this common affliction.
Breast cancer disproportionately impacts women, and according to the CDC, about 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men in the United States. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial to catch the disease in its most treatable stages. This can come in the form of mammograms and self-examinations.
Senior Sara Garcia has experienced the effects of breast cancer firsthand. A year ago, her mother was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She shares her experience, saying, “Early detection saved my mom’s life. If not for vigilant doctors looking out for her, she might not have been diagnosed as early as she was. Even though our journey was very difficult, we were blessed with a great support network, especially through Rosary.”
Mallory Mojica-Ye ‘24 shares a similar experience stating, “I discovered my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early stages of the pandemic. I was pretty detached from the situation, as I was unable to visit her due to Covid restrictions. It was difficult to understand because it didn’t feel real. I never expected anyone I knew to be diagnosed, let alone my grandmother. As soon as I processed that she was sick, she was in remission. My grandma and family were fortunate enough to have a mild brush with cancer, so I try to remain aware of everything encompassing it.”
This October, remind your loved ones to get tested annually and take some time to spread awareness. Whether this be by word of mouth, social media, or sporting your favorite pink attire, be sure to show your support. You could be saving someone’s life.
