The week of the Servite vs. Mater Dei game, Rivalry Week, is the most energetic time on Servite’s campus. The week includes a dunk tank, smashing a car painted in Mater Dei’s signature colors, and a pep-rally the day of the game.
But one tradition from Rivalry Week stands out among the rest: the Friar Cut.
The infamous Friar Cut tradition involves students having a huge bald circle shaved on the top of their head, replicating the haircut most friars would have in the 15th century. This past Monday and Tuesday, brave Friars took turns sitting in chairs in the middle of the quad to get their heads shaved by Priory generals.
This tradition is not mandatory for students but is a way for them strengthen their brotherhood.
Freshman Ciaran Garcia made the bold decision to get the cut. He explained, “I was bored, and I felt like doing it. I was also bribed. I have zero regrets.”
Noah Warren ’26, who also took part in the tradition, said, “I regretted not getting one last year, and I wanted to show my school spirit. I’m glad I got it, but the only downside is my mom won’t look at me for a week.”
Not just underclassmen decided to get the friar cut. During lunchtime announcements on Tuesday, Priory General John Carlson ’24 made a statement on the loudspeaker, saying, “The best leaders lead by example. For that reason, I will be getting a Friar Cut.”
During lunch, the students watched as John took a seat with a black trash bag wrapped around him. Moments before the razor was turned on, John was asked to say a few words. He proudly said, “I’m getting the Friar Cut because I support my brothers and I love the fight!” Students cheered in support for John as the head-shaving began.
John’s girlfriend, Caroline Herman ’24, expressed, “I think it’s an interesting way to show school spirit, although personally I would never get one. I remember when my boyfriend told me about the whole process. Even though I was surprised when he told me he was getting one, I respect how passionate he is about Servite traditions. ”
If you can’t fathom the idea of these absurd haircuts, I suggest you see them in person this Friday at the Mater Dei vs. Servite football game. Make sure to get your tickets (they’re free for students) and support your Servite brothers!
