When I think of September, I think of fall leaves on the ground, the cold weather, fashion month, and the VMA’s. The Video Music Awards is an award show hosted by MTV meant to honor the top artists of the year, with the biggest award being “Music Video of the Year.” Here are some fashion hits and misses from the 2023 show.
Taylor Swift:
The icon has done it again with a stunning Versace dress (although I could be a little biased based on the fact that she is my top-streamed artist). Ms. Swift had all the sparkling gold details stand out with her long black dress. I love when celebrities and their teams put in an effort to match all of the details. Everything about this outfit is perfect, from her nails and matching the Versace buttons to her ring. Looking fabulous, Taylor took home 9 VMA awards!
Dove Cameron:
Dove Cameron has nailed look after look on the red carpet lately. But this appearance is not one of my favorites of the night. It looks like a dress I would find at Windsor for Winter Formal. I think a necklace or a good statement earring would have been a nice touch to really make the look pop.
Sabrina Carpenter:
You know what was not “Nonsense?” Ms. Sabrina Carpenter’s looks! My favorite look of the night was probably the two-piece set. Mixing the shimmery corset with the tulle dress on top made a perfect match. The ruching on the dress was very flattering on her. Her matching dress from her performance was exactly how to do a whole vibe in one night. She has been serving look after look in her “old Hollywood glam” era.
Honorable mentions:
Anitta, Emily Ratajkowski, Tinashe, and Ashanti’s outfits would have probably sent the Dean of Rosary into a coma if a student had come to Homecoming wearing one of their scandalous outfits.
A debatable look was Offset: a suit with a cropped black and white coat and cowboy-style silver belt. I think he looked great in this outfit. It is a twist on the basic black suit and tie in his own style. Sophomore Justine Wilson disagreed, saying: “I don’t like the cropped jacket, it doesn’t match the skirt.” Olivia Rodrigo stayed on the safer side of red carpet fashion. It looked like she had just found the dress the night before and put it on. But I will never complain about a gown that makes a person feel comfortable, and the dress looks quite flattering on her.
