The best time of year is quickly approaching–fall and winter. Although it is still 90 degrees in SoCal, the essence of fall should not come at the cost of blistering heat and suffocating humidity. Fall and winter fashion is known for incorporating deep jewel tones, leather, velvet, and the most important of them all–chunky cable knit sweaters. According to some of the most influential fashion magazines, like Marie Claire and Glamour, here are the trends to keep you looking cozy and stylish this holiday season:
First up is the color red. According to InStyle Magazine, this bold color was everywhere during fall Fashion Week. In an article from Harper’s Bazaar, “Memo from Fashion Week: Red is the New Pink,” the first runway shows of the fall season were covered in hues of bright red: “They’re done with thinking pink, to put it mildly. At least twelve designers at New York Fashion Week have cast their votes for red as the soon-to-be-everywhere shade of 2023.” Red conveys a sense of maturity and sophistication, a big contrast to youthful, vibrant pink. Whether it’s maroon or scarlet, all shades of red are all the rage. In fact, Marie Claire Magazine noted a 33% increase in outfits compared to last year.
Lads and lasses, the peplum is back! Originally starting in the mid-nineteenth century, and resurfacing nearly 70 years later, this early 2000’s trend was short-lived, and much to everyone’s surprise, it is making a comeback. The design is most commonly found on tops, as a ruffle that flares above the hips to accentuate the waist. However, a modern take on the peplum means this style is not just limited to tops and blouses, it is now on skirts and suits.
Next up: business casual. This trend is putting a spin on quiet luxury by elevating our normal, everyday outfits. According to Vogue, a fashion magazine, quiet luxury is “less austere than minimalism but more polished than ‘normcore.’” In other words, quiet luxury is elevated basics: wide-leg jeans, trousers, blazers, trench coats, and simple shirts. The trend highlights high-quality, yet minimalistic pieces that are timeless. The focus has shifted from sharper silhouettes to softer, but not baggy, profiles.
Large outerwear is a staple that should be in everyone’s fall wardrobe. This fall, the puffer jackets and trench coats keep getting bigger–and better. Tailored coats and blazers have fashionistas in a chokehold. Much like quiet luxury, these oversized garments are classic and add sophistication to any look. Especially in the workplace, trench coats symbolize professionalism. Another fun take on large jackets is the denim jacket: big sleeves contrasted with a slimmer fit around the waist create a playful piece for wardrobes of all ages. Layering these big coats with sweaters will especially make a statement this holiday season!
Denim has undoubtedly been a part of the biggest trends, but I am glad to inform you that cargo jeans are still in style. Vogue says, “The style combines two trends into one casual and comfy winter staple: the baggy jeans and the cargo pants.” Relaxed-fit jeans have been popular for quite some time after the retirement of skinny jeans but will reach their all-time high this year. The looser fit is correlated with comfort, warmth, and a more relaxed, carefree vibe to match the ease of the chilly holiday season.
