When you think about football, you probably think about Friday night games, Joe Burrow, massive stadiums, and the Super Bowl, not a football team at an all-girls high school. This fall football season, however, 29 Royals took on the challenge of becoming part of the first ever CIF Rosary Flag Football team. This year will mark the first official year of Rosary flag football, adding a new exciting chapter to Rosary sports history.
In March of 2023, athletes joined the team for spring training and the opportunity to play at SoFi Stadium. As a team, the girls had three practices before facing the intimidating Hawthorne High School, a team that has been playing in a club league for two years. The Royals battled it out in a 70,000 seat stadium and came out with their first win! Following the exciting win, the flag football team went on to have an exciting summer training leading up to the fall season. The Royals have received much praise for being pioneers in a brand new sport, even being featured in an article on the OC Catholic.
Senior Quarterback Katie Meneses is especially excited to play football for her last year at Rosary: “Flag Football was my first love when it came to sports. I have been playing since I was in 2nd grade, and knowing that it was coming to Rosary was a big deal for me and I knew from the start that I wanted to lead this team and help expand the program for many years to come.” Katie has been a great leader on and off the field for her teammates, known for her amazing aim and resilience.
Despite being a new sport, building a community has not been a hard task for the team. In fact, the team has had many core memories on and off the field from first season wins to Starbucks trips and carpool karaoke. Sophie Figueroa ‘26 explained, “I love our team so much. We’re all such a close community and we love to cheer each other on. Nobody is negative and everyone always offers to help others out when they need it. We laugh and have fun but we are all also super competitive and know what it means to be on a team/family.”
The season has just begun and the Rosary Flag Football team has already experienced incredible victories, marking the beginning of a long line of history for flag football. Come cheer on our Royals at their next home game, Saturday Sept. 8 at Servite High School and become a part of history!
