Parent commentary post Red and Gold
March 8, 2023
Moments after the winner is announced on the last night of Red and Gold, it is obvious you will see half of the side cheering for being victorious while the other half just awkwardly sits there doing their best to not look at everyone else.
Whether you win or lose, you will hear many different comments; however, the best comments come from the parents themselves. In all honesty, the parents spit out some of the most out-of-pocket comments to us whether we win or lose. With that being said, let’s take a look at what some parents said to their daughters after last year’s Red and Gold show.
Even though the Gold team won last year, that does not stop many parents from providing an unnecessary comment. Annabella Baretto ‘23 shared that her dad said, “Why did you look like that during the finale? I wasted $70 on that costume.” Honestly, how could Annabella even explain herself?
Anna Jordan ‘23 shared a conversation between her and her parents after the show last year: “So, who was that homeless person on stage? Was that a cameo?” (The parents). “What homeless person, that was a normal person on stage? Did you think I wrote a homeless person in the script?” (Anna) “Ya, we did. Our bad” (The parents again).
Now, moving on to the Red team. You can assume that these might be a little bit worse than the parents of the Gold team considering the fact Red did not win last year. As a parent of a daughter who is not on the winning team, you would think they would provide some comfort, or just simply say, “Don’t worry sweetie, you did great.” However, with some of these Rosary parents, that may not be the case. Layla Langrell ‘23 shared that last year her parents texted her saying, “Gold is going to win.” Layla also shared that her parents texted her this when she hadn’t even performed yet.
Last year, Emma Silva ‘23 shared she walked out the gym crying due to her loss on the Red team. Emma’s parents had no shame saying, “Do you think anyone else cares?” Ouch.
Aside from hearing things from the parents after the last show on Saturday night, some of the best things parents say are when they talk about the entirety of the show. Layla Valenzuela ‘23 shared that her dad said, “So, what was the plot of the show?” Got to love when your parents come to see your performance but have no idea what it was all about.
Junior Valeria Avila said that her parents didn’t say anything quite interesting after the show; however, Valeria’s mom’s clothes said otherwise. Valeria shared that even though she was on the Red team, her mom decided to show up wearing all gold.
If you’ve learned one thing after reading this article, it’s to prepare yourself for something like this to come out of your parents. Yes, you may have to do a double take if they say something that heinous; however, you do have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes, parents really just do not know how to give some lighthearted feedback to their children, especially after a Red and Gold performance.
