The fashion highlights of the BAFTAs and the SAGs
March 3, 2023
2023’s award season has been decent in terms of fashion, but compared to years past, it’s no standout—however, if any looks will be respected down the line, at least a couple will likely be from the 2023 SAGs and BAFTAs. Maybe celebrity stylists had a brief moment of clarity in the week these two events took place, or maybe this was a big prank on me specifically to get my hopes up that the future of fashion is not doomed, only for red-carpet mediocrity to return next week.
SAGs Looks
My first favorite look from the SAGs is the Schiaparelli dress Michelle Yeoh donned for a night of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” successes, including Yeoh winning the SAG for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role. I love the linear bushel of sequins that runs down this dress, I love the jewelry and styling that accompanies the unconventional gown, and I just love Michelle Yeoh. Thank you, Galactic Empress Michelle Yeoh, for always crushing red carpets and starring in the best movies.
My next favorite SAG look came from ultimate fashion girlie Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary”
excellence in her seashell-topped Sabaji gown. I honestly believe that Quinta Brunson is the single best-dressed celebrity of this year, and I just love this ultra-classy, mermaidy look that exudes so much creativity and fun in such a subdued way. Quinta, thank you for keeping me fed with these looks.
Of course, I can’t talk about this year’s SAGs without mentioning Chancellor Supreme of Fashion, Madame President Zendaya. I can’t get started on either of her SAG looks because I will not be able to stop. It makes me feel ill thinking about how excellent both looks are. The only compliment I can choke out without spiraling into a fit of praises is that I am inexpressibly grateful to Zendaya for including beautiful necklaces in both her Valentino and Armani looks, as the necklace drought on recent red carpets has been really stressful for me personally.
BAFTAs Looks
My first BAFTA fav came from Vick Hope in a very on-trend yet timeless Khya Studios gown paired with stunning
Bulgari jewelry. I had no clue who Vick Hope was before this (apparently she is a British journalist andradio personality), but regardless she deserves some props for this undeniable slay. It feels so early-2000s glamorous and convinced me that Hope was much more famous than she likely is.
However, no one demolished the BAFTAs red carpet like Dame Florence Pugh, beloved host of “Cooking with Flo” with some acting projects on the side. I LOVE THIS LOOK. Florence looks stunning in this radiant orange Harris Reed number, and the mimicking of her spiky, tulle dress with her adorable hair and bangs is nothing short of perfection. This look makes me want to cut my bangs short and wear my hair like that every single day, though I would likely look a lot less cool than Miss Flo.
I urge you to look up these pictures on your own, I don’t want the low-quality of these images to diminish the slaynicity of the looks. SAGs and BAFTAs, you picked up some of the fashion slack this year, but I am still awaiting a red carpet moment that leaves me unconscious and knocks Planet Earth off its axis.
