D1 lacrosse commit: Ava Acuna
February 17, 2023
On Monday, Feb. 6, Senior Ava Acuña committed to St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York to play Division l women’s lacrosse! She has been working very hard in and out of class to make her dream of playing at the collegiate level come true. Although obstacles have come her way, she has overcome them while staying determined and dedicated on and off the field.
She announced her commitment this past Saturday, Feb 11. In her post she says, “I am beyond grateful to announce my commitment to play D1 lacrosse at St. Bonaventure University! Thank you to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates who have been my biggest supporters! #rollbonnies”
With many Royals thinking of playing sports at the collegiate level, I thought it would be interesting to do a Q&A with Ava to hear why lacrosse is so important to her and why she chose to play at this specific college!
How long have you been playing lacrosse and how many hours do you put into training a week?
I’ve been playing lacrosse since 7th or 8th grade. I put in about 10+ hours per week depending on my practice and training schedule.
What effects has it had on you throughout your life?
I’ve been playing sports all my life so it’s grown to be a very important part of me. Whether it be looking over film, keeping up with stats on my favorite teams, or simply just watching a game, sports are always incorporated into my everyday life. I couldn’t imagine my life without playing lacrosse; the mere thought of not going to practice everyday baffles me. It is not only the sport itself that I enjoy participating in, but the bond between my teammates that makes playing more enjoyable.
Is there a specific player or person you look up to in the sport? Why?
I have a high regard for Michelle Tumolo as well as Dempsey Arsenault. They are both amazing players who have competed at the national level. I got the opportunity to watch Dempsey Arsenault play at one of my tournaments for a special Pro-Game they were hosting and I was in awe at her unbelievable skills.
What made you choose St. Bonaventure University?
I was able to go visit the campus in October and had the opportunity to meet the team as well as the coaches. I absolutely loved the tight-knit community at the school and the familial feeling on the team amongst the players. I also loved the hospitality of the town outside of the school. It made my trip to an unfamiliar area a lot less intimidating.
Are you scared or nervous about anything?
Although I am a little intimidated to play at the collegiate level, I am confident in my abilities to be able to play lacrosse at a competitive division with the help of my teammates as well as the guidance of my coaches.
What are you most looking forward to?
I am most looking forward to moving to a new environment with new people. It is a big change and will take some adjustment of course but I am excited to take on this challenge.
Anything you would like to let the student athletes know at rosary about your recruiting experience?
I know the pressure of where you’re going and where you’ll end up may be stressful, but you will find the right school and program that works for you. So, don’t worry too much, everything will work itself out.
I think it is pretty clear that she is ready for this exciting time to come upon her. Although it won’t be easy, she has the right mindset to continue to shine in lacrosse wherever she may be… Congrats Ava! Your Royal sisters are so proud of you and cannot wait to hear all the amazing things you accomplish at St. Bonaventure University! Go Bonnies!
