BRIT’s fashion review

Mr. Styles is starting to clean up his fashion act, and I’m thankful.

On Feb. 11, the hip-hoppinest of Britain’s musical scene gathered for the BRITs Award Show, featuring performances from stars like Lizzo and Harry Styles, corny British humor, and most importantly, a red carpet to kick things off. With such a lame show of fashion at this year’s Grammys, the eccentricity some celebs pulled off in their BRITs glamour was a breath of fresh air—here are a few of my favorites:

Harry Styles

Now, Mr. Styles actually had four separate looks within the BRITs itinerary, all of which were significantly better than both of his Grammys looks. Like, what the freak, Harold. You chose respectable fits for a low-scale, basically regional award show instead of the literal Grammys???

Moving on, I loved his red-carpet Nina Ricci look, with the surprisingly stylish peplum and on-trend puffed rose choker; it was way more fun and Harry Stylish than aforementioned recent looks, and I like the direction its signaling for men’s fashion, which is actual fun and interesting motifs in clothing. His red, shirtless performance look was fun and probably functional while running around and dancing, and his post-press black, tweed suit was very posh and well-constructed.

However, his seafoam ceremony look is a standout of the night and one of my favorite menswear looks ever. I said what I said. I think it’s very nicely fitted, I ADORE the color, I love the shiny silk undershirt contrasting with the matte suit and dark matte buttons, I LOVE the white string motifs, and I love the bunny print on his pants button. I know it’s not too flashy or earth-shattering, but I personally love it and want to buried in it. It semi-redeemed him, but new music would probably fully expunge his crimes for me.

Amelia Dimoldenberg

I wonder if Amelia will wear this dress to her next Chicken Shop Date. (Photo taken from @ameliadimz)

Fans of Amelia will know her from her  excellent web-show “Chicken Shop Date” or from her flirtatious interview with Andrew Garfield; either way, she is a rising star in the world of interviewing and journalism, and in my opinion, an up-and-coming fashion girlie. Her dress is a distressed and reimagined Union Jack flag creatively draped into a lovely dress.

I am a sucker for playing into theme, and wearing a literal British flag remade to look stylish to the BRITs is just a bit excellent. Styled with her new darker, reddish hair and a makeup look that totally suited the dress, I just LOVED this Amelia look so much, and I think she should be the first person to interview everyone ever (which is not connected to her look, but I just feel very strongly about it).

Lizzo

gorgeous, controversial, or just stylish looks at any event she attends. After delivering a fantastic bright-orange-flower-corset-cape extravaganza at the Grammys, Lizzo did not lose momentum at the BRITs.

Though I liked her red-carpet look, I LOVED her performance look: a beautiful pastel pink silk slip dress up to the shoulder, then from there up, it’s a tulle, half-dome apparatus that frames her adorable haircut and perfect makeup. Not only that, but part-way through the performance, she ripped the bottom off to reveal the gown was actually a mini-dress! Talk about performance!

I fully believe Lizzo will go down as a fashion icon, and this adorable look will be among the evidence of her slaynicity.

Sam Smith

Ahhhhh, the look that had the Internet abuzz. I know you guys

This look feels very Hunger-Games-Capital-fashion, but in a slightly less dystopian way. (Photo taken from @samsmith)

want me to say I hate this look, but I just can’t. I haven’t felt this conflicted over a fashion moment since

Klum-Worm-Gate. However, I’ve decided I simply can’t hate anything so iconic and identifiable. Even if it is immortalized as a meme, I think this look will remain remembered and referenced for years to come, as I think specificity is a requisite for genuinely iconic fashion looks.

I know it’s a silly goofy ha-ha look, but I love that it’s actually distinct and different, and I think Sam Smith is exploring a side of fashion that plebs like you and me don’t understand. I don’t think we should fear this look; try not to fear the unknown, and embrace this kooky balloon suit thing! Life will be better!

Honorable mentions go out to Rina Sawayama and Charli XCX. Thank you to the BRITs for having more interesting fashion than the majority of this season’s award shows, and to all you celebs out there that are definitely reading this, STEP IT UP FOR THE MET GALA.
