Ah, love is in the air…or so they say. For those of us who don’t have a special someone, Valentine’s Day can leave some feeling sad. But I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that way.

Ladies, let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day is overrated.

We all know Valentine’s candy is horrible. Who has ever actually gotten a nice box of chocolates on Valentines? I won’t even bother trying to explain those stupid Sweethearts. The teddy bears are too cheesy. The cards are so fake. The decorations are cute for two seconds. The only nice thing you might get on Valentines is a bouquet of roses and a fancy dinner if you’re lucky.

This uneventful “holiday” is too materialistic for me. Why are couples only showing that they care about each other one day of the year?  It’s a little suspicious if you ask me (we should also talk about the fact that Valentines is not even a national holiday). Ms. Barclay ‘94 understands the true meaning of Valentine’s Day, “Valentine’s is only important if I don’t get anything. In which case, it’s SUPER important”.

The whole hype of Valentine’s Day lasts waaaaayy too long. I mean, come on CVS, you don’t need to put up the decorations the day after Christmas. They obviously don’t understand that putting hearts on anything and EVERYTHING doesn’t make it Valentines themed.

Let’s be honest people: no one cares about couples taking one day a year to act like they genuinely like each other. Yeah, yeah, you went to a fancy dinner, that obviously means we all care. Surprise! We don’t. Valentine’s day provides the perfect opportunity for couples to be SO fake.

Then again, maybe we’re getting Valentines wrong. There’s so many families that celebrate Valentine’s: what if it’s a family holiday and wasn’t ever meant for couples?

Senior Tori Gomez definitely agrees with my theory, adding: “In my seventeen years of living, I have never spent Valentine’s Day with a significant other. I like it that way because the love I have for my family will last forever and it’s important to celebrate that rather than any other temporary relationship”.

In all honesty, I think Valentine’s Day is an important day for all of us to show how much we care about those around us, whether that be a significant other or just your family and friends, but please, don’t be too cheesy.
