The hits and misses of TikTok food trends

I may be a bland salad gal, but this salad actually makes my mouth water.

As I look back at TikTok 2022 and see flashes of Brazilian kids absolutely killing dance competitions, people doing the Wednesday dance like there’s no tomorrow, the flying “me as a baby” little green-hatted wizard, and the corn kid, I’m also reminded of the many questionable and scrumptious food recommendations that have graced my For You page.

In recognition of these ghosts of food trends past, I will be compiling a list of some of the hits and misses of FoodTok 2022.

Hit: Jennifer Aniston Salad

Look, in all honesty, I didn’t try this because I’m more of a bland salad gal, but, Alex Bohn ’23 did try the trend and had nothing but good things to say about it: “I had seen the Jennifer Aniston salad in multiple ‘glow up’ YouTube videos, and I thought I would try it. In all honesty, I’m very picky about salads, but this was literally one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. I 100% recommend trying this salad to anyone who wants to switch it up, and I’ll definitely be making it again.”

Miss: “Healthy” Balsamic Vinegar Coke

I know absolutely no one that tasted this hellish drink, but I will describe it to you just so you understand the severity of its grossness. Balsamic Vinegar, Ice, and a La Croix. You expect me to believe that tastes like Coke but slightly healthier?! Honestly guys, Coke made Diet Coke and Coke Zero for a reason…

Hit: Bell Pepper filled with Cream Cheese

Again, I’m not this adventurous with my snacks, and the smell of a raw bell pepper nearly makes me gag, so I opted out of this trend, but luckily Reagan Beuerlein ’23 did not, and like Alex, she did not regret her decision: “Basically, I saw @janellerohner on TikTok. I can’t remember which year it was, but I love avocado toast with everything bagel seasoning, so I already love the seasoning that she would put on her keto-friendly meals. When I saw her post a video on bell peppers with cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning on top, I was really intrigued because I liked each of those things individually, but I was kind of questioning them all together. This combination was better than I could’ve imagined, and it’s definitely a go-to snack of mine know for sure.”

Miss: Carrot Salad

Now, this one is something I did try, and boy, did I wish I never I did. This is seriously just a salad with shaved carrots, rice vinegar, olive oil, lime, sesame seeds, and salt, so how bad could it possibly be? I was expecting a taste like the vinegary cucumber dish you get at sushi restaurants or even just a pickle-like flavor, but it was so far from that. It may have been because I never measure ingredients, but this salad was a vinegary mess. The vinegar was so pungent and way too strong, I honestly felt sick after eating it. So, next time, I’ll just stick with plain, classic carrots.

Do with this last what you will. Try the hits and maybe even try the misses and also brace yourself for a whole new year of questionable FoodTok trends.
