Students taking ASL with Ms. Rivera are participating in Deaf Day/Silent Day. The opportunity will give students the ability to experience how a deaf person lives and it will take place on Friday, September 16.

Keep an eye out for participating students by looking for colorful earplugs and nametags. Please respect those participating by avoiding raising your voices, respecting the experience, and writing as a mode of communication if you cannot communicate with ASL.

Senior Tori Gomez who is a four-year ASL student expresses her excitement and appreciation for this opportunity: “I think it is important to put ourselves in the position of those who use ASL in their daily lives. It’s good to put ourselves in that situation as students so we can see the challenges being deaf comes with. I am grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to put my ASL knowledge to use!”

Ms. Rivera believes that Deaf Day/Silent Day is an excellent opportunity for students: “Deaf Day is important to all students because it enables students to familiarize themselves with deafness and how to communicate when someone cannot vocalize.” This day will be a great learning experience for those taking ASL and for all Rosary students to gain more awareness of those part of the deaf community.
