Sitcoms you need watch
September 2, 2022
My name is Emma Silva, and if there is one thing I pride myself on, it is my impeccable taste in sitcoms.
For some background, I love TV. I even took a course over the summer to learn how to write for TV. I can finish a show in one day. I watch an unhealthy amount of TV in a week. This obsession has turned me into a connoisseur of sitcoms.
A good sitcoms must be a couple things. Obviously, it must be funny. But it has to be funny in a smart way, a way that audiences haven’t seen before. A sitcom has to keep things fresh. This genre thrives on 30 minute episodes packed with punchline after punchline, and no one wants to watch a sitcom that drags. A sitcom has to create dynamic and nuanced characters who are more than just witty dialogue.
And last, but not least… a sitcom must be relatable. Preferably beyond just basic comedic relatability. Being funny is great, but the best sitcoms use their humor to create scenarios or themes that audiences relate to.
So, without further ado… sitcoms you need to watch.
If you are just dipping your toes into the word of sitcoms, you should start off with some network classics. Try shows like “Parks and Recreation,” “New Girl,” or “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” “Parks and Recreation” follows the classic mockumentary style of many sitcoms, but keeps it fresh with wholesome and relatable humor. I mean, anything starring and produced by Amy Poehler is gonna be great. “New Girl” is always fun to watch, with low-stakes and fun romances galore. It is the ultimate crowd pleaser. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has a star-studded cast, and is one of my personal favorite workplace comedies. It always guest stars plenty of “SNL” alumni, and is always a fun laugh.
Perhaps you have seen all of those, and are looking for something else. Might I recommend “The Good Place,” “Community,” and “Only Murderers in the Building.” These shows are amazing. “The Good Place” will have you laughing and crying all at once. “Community” has some of the best television writing ever. It’s consistent genre-bending, parodying, and laughs create some of the best sitcom material ever. “Only Murderers in the Building” could be argued as a dramedy, but is hilarious nonetheless. Starring Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, it’s an amazing addition to TV available on streaming.
Now for some deep cuts. “Freaks and Geeks,” “Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous,” and “Arrested Development.” “Freaks and Geeks” was one of Judd Apatow’s first productions, and stars big names like a young Linda Cardellini and Jason Segal. This show is an absolute cult-classic. It was sadly cancelled after only one season, and could also be considered a dramedy. It is a hilarious and sometimes heart wrenching look at adolescence, and I cannot recommend it enough.
“Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous” is hilarious. Another show sadly cancelled after one season, this show has a hilarious concept and stars young Bo Burnham. I’m not a huge fan of Bo Burnham, but the show’s timing and editing never misses. “Arrested Development” is a show that is meant to be binged. It takes place in Orange County, and also has an amazing cast (Will Arnett, Micheal Cera, Jason Bateman, etc.). With witty jokes like “Lucille” and “loose seal” this show never fails to make me laugh. I recommend stopping watching after season three. Not every show can remain good forever.
There is at least fifteen other sitcoms I could recommend, but then this list would go on for ages. So instead, I urge you to sit down on your couch, and watch a good sitcom. Everyone could always use a good laugh.
